Method and apparatus for locating the document referencing corner in a document scanner.

Abstract

A document (11) to be scanned is corner referenced on a transparent platen (12), with the document's image facing down. The platen defines an X-Y coordinate system matrix. A moving line of light (24) extends in the X direction and illuminates the document's image, line by line, as the line of light moves in the Y direction. The line of light that is thus reflected from the document is sensed by a linear CCD sensor array (27) having a large number of individual sensor cells (28) arranged in a line that effectively extends in the X direction. Each cell of the CCD array defines an individual pixel (PEL) within the line of light that is reflected from the document. A reflection target (54) is located at a known position relative to the platen's referencing corner, to be scanned prior to scanning the document. Sensing of the target enables (1) the X direction physical position of the CCD sensor array relative to the referencing corner to be accurately determined (86), and (2) the Y direction physical position of the line of light relative to the the referencing corner to be accurately determined (87), both parameters being determined prior to scanning of the document.

  1. 1
In a document scanner (10) having platen means (12) including a document referencing corner (58) that is established by two orthogonal axes that define an X-Y coordinate system, and having a linear sensor array (27) and optical means (20) for generating a linear light footprint (24) that is operative to scan a document (11) that is corner referenced on said platen means as said footprint moves in the Y direction in said coordinate system, a method for determining any variation in the X direction relative physical location of said referencing corner and a sensor array, comprising the steps of, (A) providing a linear sensor array (27) having a plurality of individual sensor cells (28) that are arranged in a line that effectively extends in said X direction and coincident with a reflection of said footprint, each cell of said array defining a picture element (PEL) of said reflected footprint. (B) providing a reflection target area (54) at a known position spaced from said referencing corner and at a location so as to be scanned prior to the document being scanned, and (C) determining (88) the individual sensor cells of said sensor array that operate to sense said target area prior to scanning of the document, and from said determination determining the relative X direction physical location of said referencing corner and said sensor array.
  2. 6
Document scanner apparatus (10), comprising:platen means (12) having a leading edge portion (13) and an orthogonally extending side edge portion (52) that together define an X-Y coordinate system, said platen means including a document support portion having a corner (58) thereof that is located at the 0,0 coordinate of said coordinate system and is operable for corner referencing a document (11) for scanning,    illumination means (16) providing a footprint of light (24) extending in the X direction of said coordinate system, said footprint being operable to scan illuminate said platen means as Y direction relative movement is provided between said footprint and said platen means, said footprint thus providing a reflected footprint of light that extends in the X direction of said coordinate system,    means (59) providing a stop position of said footprint relative to said platen means from which a document scan is initiated, said footprint being operable to illuminate said leading edge portion of said platen means when in said stop position,    linear sensor array means (27) having a plurality of individual sensor cells (28) arranged in a line that effectively extends in the X direction of said coordinate system and coincident with said reflected footprint, each individual cell of said array means thus defining a picture element (PEL) of said reflected footprint, said linear sensor array means being located at a variable X direction position relative to said 00 coordinate of said coordinate system,    reflection target means (54) positioned within said leading edge portion of said platen means and at a location between the stop position of said footprint and said support portion of said platen means, and at a known position relative to said 0,0 coordinate of said coordinate system so as to be scanned by said footprint prior to the scanning of a document, and    means (86,87) for determining the relative X direction position of said linear sensor array means and said 0,0 coordinate of said coordinate system by determining the individual cells of said sensor array means that operate to sense said target means.
