    A wide area cordless telephone system for covering a plurality of service areas (6) in each of which a plurality of cordless stations (5) are located, comprising control means (3) and a plurality of access units (4), wherein said control means (3) are connected to a telephone network (2) for generating an individual-call signal when an incoming call from said network (1) is an individual call destined for one of the cordless stations (5), each access unit (4) being responsive to said individual-call signal for establishing a speech channel to a cordless station through said control channel using a speech-channel identifier and alerting the cordless station with a ringing signal, said access units (4) being divided into a plurality of groups corresponding respectively to said service areas (6), the access units (4) of each group being located in the corresponding service area (6) for establishing a control channel, characterized:in that said control means (3) is arranged to produce a group-call signal when the incoming call is a group call destined for the cordless stations (5) of a given area;in that said access units (4) are responsive to the group-call signal for successively establishing respective speech channels to the cordless stations of said given area by transmitting respective speech channel identifiers over said control channel, and simultaneously transmitting ringing signals to the cordless stations through the established speech channels;and in that said access units (4) are responsive to an off-hook signal returning from one of the cordless stations that answers the group call for clearing those of the speech channels established to the cordless stations other than the answering cordless station by transmitting ring trip signals to said other cordless stations, in that said control means (3) is responsive to said group call for supplying a group alert signal to a specified one of said access units (4 1 ) when said incoming call is a group call destined for the cordless stations (5) of said given service area, and supplies group standby signals to the access units (4 2 , ....., 4 k ) other than the specified unit (4 1 ), said group alert signal containing a plurality of pairing identifiers respectively indicating access units (4) and cordless stations (5) which establish respective speech channels therebetween, and each group standby signal containing a different one of said pairing identifiers, in that said specified access unit (4 1 ) is arranged to transmit a copy of said group alert signal to cordless stations (5) of said given service area through the control channel in response to said group alert signal to cause the cordless stations (5) to return respective ones of said pairing identifiers through said control channel, and the access units other than the specified unit are arranged to store pairing identifiers respectively contained in said group standby signals, and in that the access units (4 2 , ....., 4 k ) other than the specified unit unit (4 1 ) are arranged to establish speech channels to the cordless stations (5) of said given service area when the pairing identifiers returning therefrom are identical to the stored pairing identifiers and to alert the cordless stations with group ringing signals through the established speech channels.
