EP0436282A2

Area-selective metallization process.

Abstract

Selective electrolytic deposition on either conductive or non-conductive bodies is provided by forming a layer of a metal which forms a plating-preventing compound on the surface of the body to be plated, and selectively interdiffusing a plating-enabling metal into the surface of that compound-forming metal in those locations where plating is desired and electroplating the body. The interdiffusion may be done before or after the plating-preventing compound has formed on the surface of the compound-forming layer. During the electroplating, the electroplating metal deposits only in those locations where the plating-enabling metal has interdiffused with the compound-forming metal. At the end of the process, the compound-forming metal may be removed in those locations where it is not covered by the electroplated metal to provide a plurality of separate plated conductors.

44 claims: 9 independent, 35 dependent

  1. 1
A method of selective electrolytic deposition comprising:providing a body having, as an exposed surface, a metal which forms a plating-preventing compound, the exposed surface of the compound-forming metal including regions in which a plating-enabling metal is interdiffused with the compound-forming metal, said exposed surface having said plating-preventing compound disposed thereon at least anywhere where said plating-enabling metal is not interdiffused with said compound-forming metal;and electroplating said body in an electroplating bath which selectively deposits only on the portions of the said compound-forming metal having said plating-enabling metal interdiffused therewith.
  2. 13
The method recited in any preceding claim wherein:said compound-forming metal is selected from the group consisting of titanium, chromium and aluminum.
  3. 15
The method recited in any preceding claim wherein:said plating-enabling metal is selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, palladium and silver.
  4. 20
A method of selectively electroplating a body comprising the steps of:coating at least a portion of the surface of said body with a metal which forms a plating-preventing compound;allowing the compound-forming metal to form said plating-preventing compound;selectively interdiffusing a plating-enabling metal into the plating-preventing compound/compound-forming metal disposed on said body;electroplating said body in an electroplating bath under conditions in which no plating occurs on the portions of said compound-forming metal where said plating-enabling metal was not interdiffused and in which electroplating does occur on the portions of said body where said plating-enabling metal was interdiffused.
  5. 39
A method of selectively electroplating a body comprising the steps of:providing said body with a coating of a metal which forms a plating-preventing compound;protecting said compound-forming metal from electroplating by allowing it to form a protective, plating-preventing compound on the exposed surface thereof;interdiffusing a plating-enabling metal which does not form a plating-preventing compound into the plating-preventing compound/compound-forming metal surface of said body to counteract the plating-preventing effect of said plating-preventing compound;electroplating said body in an electroplating bath which does not plate on the undisturbed portions of said plating-preventing-compound-coated surface of said metal surface layer and which does electroplate on the portions of the surface of said body where said plating-enabling metal is interdiffused with said metal surface layer/plating-preventing compound.
  6. 40
A method of electroplating metals which form plating-preventing compounds when exposed to air comprising the steps of:diffusing a plating-enabling metal into the surface of the compound-forming metal in those locations where electroplating is desired;and electroplating said metal in an electroplating bath which will electroplate those portions of said compound-forming metal having said plating-enabling metal diffused therein.
  7. 41
An electronic circuit comprising:a metal layer which forms a plating-preventing compound;a metal which does not form a plating-preventing compound interdiffused with said metal layer;and a layer of a metal which can be deposited by electroplating disposed on said interdiffused metal layer.
  8. 43
In combination:a metal layer which forms a plating-preventing compound;a metal which does not form a plating-preventing compound interdiffused with said metal layer;and a layer of a metal which can be deposited by electroplating disposed on the compound-forming metal layer where said plating-preventing compound is interdiffused with said compound-forming metal.
  9. 44
A body including:a metal which forms a plating-preventing compound;a metal which does not form a plating-preventing compound interdiffused with the compound-forming metal;and a layer of a metal which can be deposited by electroplating disposed on the compound-forming metal where said plating-enabling metal is interdiffused with said compound-forming metal.
