A communication system comprising a called receiver and a communication apparatus

The communication system comprises a portable radio called re­ceiver (21, Fig. 2) and a communication apparatus (1) for calling the receiver. The receiver comprises a display (27) and a tone generating circuit (25). The communication apparatus (1) comprises a determina­tion circuit (4), a control circuit (5), a voice signal recording de­vice (in 6), a facsimile device (8), a memory (9), and a data proces­sing circuit (10). The determination circuit (4) makes the determi­nation as to whether the signal entered through the telephone line (2) is a facsimile signal or a voice signal. The memory (9) stores the display data indicating the reception of an image signal, the display data indicating the reception of a voice signal, and telephone number data of the portable radio called recei­ver. The control circuit (5) is responsive to the output of the deter­mination circuit to select one out of the plurality of display data stored in the memory (9). The data processing circuit (10) modulates the calling number of the receiver and the display data from the con­trol circuit (5) and transmits the same on the telephone line (2). With such a structure, the display of the receiver can display whether the received signal of the communication apparatus is an image signal or a voice signal.
