Anti-bacterial agent for swimming pools, aquariums and lagoons.
Abstract
For controlling bacterial infestation in swimming pools, aquaria and lagoons, it is proposed to add to the water a solution of one part of iodine and two parts of potassium iodide. The concentration in the swimming pool should be no more than ten millilitres, and in aquaria less than five millilitres per cubic metre. The application is advantageously carried out in such a way that the solution is applied to a porous stone and the latter is lowered into the water of the swimming pool or aquarium. In practice, no irritation of the mucosae or eyes of the users was found.

p0001The invention relates to an additive for controlling bacterial contamination in swimming pools, aquariums and silent fishponds with a known solution of one part of iodine and two parts potassium iodide.
p0002From EP 0075240 A1 and the CH-PS 506 295 a solution of one part iodine and two parts of potassium iodide is known, which is used as a disinfectant.
p0003From US-PS 32 88 708 and US-PS 33 26 147 a disinfectant is known, in which the solution of iodine and iodide an oxidizing agent, such as Perjodad or ozone is added to thereby desinfiszieren wastewater and swimming pools.
p0004It has now been found that when entering such solutions in the water of a swimming pool, an aquarium or a fish pond disinfection effect has faded away after a short time or has led to significant odors and partly to the discoloration of the water. This direct addition of the solution to the water enters no sufficient mixing, and a large part of the solution floating on the water surface and evaporates very quickly.
p0005The object of the invention to provide an additive of the type mentioned, which leads added to the water for a long-term effect of disinfection and an excellent mixing of the solution with the water.
p0006This object is achieved according to the invention in that it applied the solution to a porous stone and this puts in the water of the swimming pool, the aquarium or fish pond.
p0007The solution is introduced to the stone in the water and thus does not remain on the water surface. From the porous stone occur fine droplets of the solution in the water and mix with this in much more favorable way. Since the mixing occurs in the area of water ground, even odors and discoloration of the water are largely avoided.
p0008According to a preferred embodiment it is provided that places the porous stone in the area near the suction of a circulating pump.
p0009The effect can be improved, that the solution is a descaling acid is buried.
p0010For the concentration, according to a configuration that the solution is beigibt the water of a swimming pool at a concentration of more than 1.0 ml per cubic meter of water, while on the other hand vergesehen that the solution of the water of an aquarium with a concentration of not more than 0 , 5 ml per cubic meter of water beigibt.
p0011Although iodine Jodkaliumlösungen been known for many years, and their desinfiszierende effect is commonly used in medicine, the application of the novel type as an additive in swimming pools and aquariums is unknown. The reason may be seen that the addition of water is problematic.
p0012Too high a concentration results once an unwanted discoloration of the water and has a fast evaporation result. Tests have shown that a good effect can be produced with an admixture of less than one ml of solution per cubic meter water. The exact concentration is hardly measurable and depends largely on the selected porous stone on which the solution is applied, as well as the circulation of the water and thus the wash-out of the solution out of the stone.
p0013It is particularly surprising that this type of water disinfection in the aquarium without affecting the flora and fauna is possible.
p0014It was also found that the bacterial contamination can be greatly slowed down when the solution is admixed a commercial liquid soap.
p0015To clean the aquarium a biodegradable soap is preferably used. The concentration of the solution should be determined depending on the application, but generally it does not exceed ten percent of the volume of liquid soap.
p0016Another advantage here is that a bacterial infection after cleaning is significantly delayed.
p0017For pools with a strong growth of algae or lime deposits, it makes sense, the solution additionally bury a descaling acid. If desired, this can be the pH between 1.5 - 4 pH adjust it.
p0018When used as an additive in pool no skin irritation or irritation of mucous membranes were observed even at relatively high concentrations. However, the dosage is difficult in aquariums and should in no case be more than five milliliters per cubic meter of water. It is advantageous here to introduce the applied on a porous His solution near the suction of the circulation pump in the aquarium in order to ensure a uniform distribution and to avoid any local Over concentration. In many cases, however, there is likely to be a sufficient natural distribution of exiting the stone solution if no circulation pump is available.
