Method and apparatus for rapid sterilization of material.

Abstract

A method and apparatus (10) for rapid sterilization of material, including articles such as dental tool holders (18), comprising introducing the article and liquid sterilant solution (22) into a collapsible bag (20) comprised of a vapor impervious sheet material, sealing said collapsible bag to form a gas-tight assembly (24), and vaporizing said liquid sterilant solution by heating to produce a hot sterilant vapor atmosphere. The hot sterilant is introduced into the bag in an amount sufficient to create an overpressure when vaporized, which is indicated by the collapsible bag expanding to a relaxed state. In one embodiment, the liquid sterilant solution is vaporized by subjecting said gas-tight assembly to microwave radiation. In other embodiments particularly suitable for the sterilization of material comprising a plurality of articles, the at least one article is surrounded by a protection, which can be separated from the pocket or integral with it, and can be integrated, i.e., integrally, in the sheet material forming the pocket, constituting a barrier to the transmission of radiation frommicrowave. The pouch containing the protected item (s) and the liquid sterilant are sealed, and the gas-tight assembly is subjected to microwave radiation to vaporize the sterilant, after which the item (s) are sterilized by a chemical vapor.
