  1. 1
A memory system for accessing memory elements in an array (30) having a first plurality of memory elements (32,34,36,38) in response to a sequence of virtual or physical memory address requests, the address of a virtual or a physical memory address request comprising a first number m of row address bits and a second number n of column address bits, said second number n of column address bits consisting of a third number p of higher order column address bits and a fourth number q of lower order column address bits, at least one of said memory address requests having a correspondence with at least one of said first plurality of memory elements, each of the memory elements having a physical address comprising said first number of physical row address bits and said second number of column address bits, characterized by:translating means (95, 92) for translating the virtual row address bits into physical row address bits;row address means (42, 44, 46, 48) capable of indicating a second plurality of memory locations having a common physical row address;first address register means (53a,53b) for holding said third number p of column address bits for use in accessing a memory element having an address which includes said third number of column address bits;second means (58,60,62,64) using said fourth number q of column address bits, for use in accessing a memory element having an address which includes said fourth number of column address bits;third means (88a,88b,90,91) for providing said third number p of bits from each of said sequential plurality of memory address requests to said first address register;fourth means (94, 96, 98, 100) for holding the m virtual or physical row address bits and the q column address bits which are left over from the previous virtual or physical memory address request;comparing means (102, 104, 106, 108) for comparing the contents of the fourth means and the present memory address request for providing a bit signal if there is coincidence;fifth means (74,76,78,80) connected to the input of said second means (58, 60, 62, 64) for holding the physical row address bits and said fourth number q of column address bits in said second means during at least two consecutive memory address requests;and sixth means ("ADR",32,34,36,38) for accessing at least one of said first plurality of memory elements using said third number p of column address bits in said first address register means, and said fourth number q of column address bits supplied by said second means.
  2. 3
A method of sequentially accessing a first plurality of memory elements (32,34,36,38) in a memory array (30) formed by an array of memory elements, in response to a sequence of virtual or physical memory address requests, the address of a virtual or a physical memory address request comprising a first number m of row address bits and a second number n of column address bits, said second number n of column address bits consisting of a third number p of higher order column address bits and a fourth number q of lower order column address bits, each element having a physical address comprising said first number m of physical row address bits and said second number n of column address bits, characterized by the following steps:providing translating means (95, 92) for translating the virtual row address bits into physical row address bits;providing row address means (42, 44, 46, 48) for indicating a second plurality of memory locations having a common physical row address;providing first address register means (53a,53b) for holding said third number p of column address bits for use in accessing a memory element having an address which includes said third number of column address bits;providing second means (58,60,62,64) using said fourth number q of column address bits, for use in accessing a memory element having an address which includes said fourth number of column address bits;transmitting said third p number of bits from each of said sequential plurality of memory address requests to said first register;providing fourth means (94, 96, 98, 100) for holding the m virtual or physical row address bits and the q column address bits which are left over from the previous virtual or physical memory address request;comparing the contents of the fourth means and the present memory address request for providing a bit signal if there is coincidence;holding the physical row address bits and said fourth number q of column address bits in said second means during at least two consecutive memory address requests;and accessing a memory element using said third number p of column address bits in said first address register means and said fourth number q of column address bits supplied by said second means.
