A bed.

Abstract

A bed comprises a base framework (2), an intermediate framework (12) and a mattress framework (7) which comprises a central frame (67), a head frame (68) and a foot frame (69). Main rams (14) and (15) connect the intermediate framework (12) to the base framework (2) for raising and lowering and tilting the intermediate framework (12) relative to the base framework (2). The rams (14) and (15) pivotally engage the intermediate framework (12) by shafts (28) and (29). The ram (15) is rigidly mounted to the main framework (2). A pivot frame (54) pivotally mounts the ram (14) about a pair of pivot axes (51) and (52) relative to the base framework (2) to accommodate tilting of the intermediate framework (12).

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A bed of the type comprising a base framework (2), a mattress framework (7) mounted on the base framework (2), the mattress framework (7) extending longitudinally from a head end (8) to a foot end (9) for supporting a mattress (5) thereon, and tilting means (14,15) for tilting the mattress framework (7) relative to the base framework (2), characterised in that an intermediate framework (12) supports the mattress framework (7), and the tilting means (14,15) comprising longitudinally spaced apart first and second main rams (14,15) connected between the base framework (2) and the intermediate framework (12), the first main ram (14) being pivotally connected to one of said frameworks (2,12), the first and second main rams (14,15) being independently operable for tilting of the intermediate framework (12) relative to the base framework (2).
  2. 2
A bed as claimed in Claim 1 characterised in that the first main ram (14) is pivotally connected to the said framework (2,12) about a pair of spaced apart, transversely disposed first and second pivot axes (51,52).
  3. 3
A bed as claimed in Claim 2 characterised in that the first main ram (14) is pivotally connected to the base framework (2) by an elongated pivot member (62) pivotally connected to the base framework (2) about the first pivot axis (51) and depending downwardly therefrom, the pivot member (62) pivotally carrying a pivot frame (54) about the second pivot axis (52), the first main ram (14) being rigidly connected to the pivot frame (54).
  4. 4
A bed as claimed in Claim 3 characterised in that each main ram (14,15) comprises a cylinder (30) and a piston slidable within the cylinder (30) and a piston rod (32) extending from the piston through the cylinder (30), the cylinder (30) of the first main ram (14) being rigidly connected to the pivot frame (54), and the cylinder (30) of the second main ram (15) being rigidly connected to the base framework (2), the piston rods (32) of each main ram (14,15) being pivotally connected to the intermediate framework (12).
  5. 5
A bed as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4 characterised in that valve means (190,191,192,193,194,195) are provided for independently operating the main rams (14,15) for tilting of the intermediate framework (12) relative to the base framework (2) and for simultaneously moving the main rams (14,15) for raising or lowering the intermediate framework (12) relative to the base framework (2).
  6. 6
A bed as claimed in any preceding claim characterised in that the mattress framework (7) comprises a central frame (67) and a head frame (68) pivotally connected to the central frame (67) at one end thereof and a foot frame (69) pivotally connected to the central frame (67) at the other end thereof, the head (68) and foot frames (69) being pivotally connected to the central frame (67) about transverse pivot axes (70,71), the head and central frames (68,67) being pivotally connected to the intermediate framework (12) about one of the transverse pivot axes (70), and means (83,108,118) for pivoting the three frames (67,68,69) relative to each other about the transverse pivot axes (70,71) are provided.
  7. 7
A bed as claimed in Claim 6 characterised in that a first secondary ram (83) mounted on the intermediate framework (12) operatively engages the head frame (68) for pivoting the head frame (68) relative to the intermediate framework (12) and the central frame (67), and a second secondary ram (118) mounted on the intermediate framework (12) operatively engages the foot frame (69) for pivoting the foot frame (69) relative to the central frame (67).
  8. 8
A bed as claimed in any preceding claim characterised in that the rams (14,15,83,118) are hydraulically operated rams and control circuitry comprising valve means (190,191,192,193,194,195) is provided for operating the hydraulic rams (14,15,83,118).
  9. 9
A bed as claimed in Claim 8 characterised in that remote control means (207) are provided for remotely transmitting a signal for reception by the control circuitry for operating the control circuitry to operate the hydraulic rams (14,15,83,118).
  10. 10
A bed as claimed in any preceding claim characterised in that a delivery means (160) for delivering a fluid medium over the mattress framework (7) is provided, the delivery means (160) being mounted spaced apart above the mattress framework (7).
