Improvement in metal oxide catalysts.

Abstract

Solid oxide compositions of the formula La1-xSrxCrO3- delta have been found to exhibit surprisingly high specific activity as catalysts for oxidation and hydrogenation reactions. They may be used in particulate form or applied as films to the surfaces of refractory substrates. These catalysts are expected to be a viable alternative to the noble metal catalysts now used commercially for treatment of combustion chamber exhaust gases to reduce environmental pollutants.

  1. 1
A catalyst composition comprising a refractory substrate and on the surface of said substrate a metal oxide of the formula La1-xSrxCrO3-δ where x is greater than 0 and less than 0.5.
  2. 5
A catalyst as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the refractory substrate has a surface area greater than 0.5 square metres per gram.
  3. 6
A catalyst as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the refractory substrate is a porous ceramic.
  4. 7
A method of oxidation comprising the use of a catalyst comprising a metal oxide of the formula La1-xSrxCrO3-δ where x is greater than 0 and less than 0.5.
  5. 8
A method of hydrogenation comprising a metal oxide of the formula La1-xSrxCrO3-δ where x is greater than 0 and less than 0.5.
  6. 9
A method for treating exhaust gases from a combustion chamber to reduce environmental pollutants in said exhaust gases, which method comprises contacting the exhaust gases, at a temperature of at least 110°C, with a metal oxide of the formula La1-xSrxCrO3-δ where x is greater than 0 and less than 0.5.
  7. 11
A method as claimed in any one of claims 7 to 10 wherein x is from 0.1 to 0.4.
