Blood pumping catheter.

Abstract

Apparatus for pumping blood comprises a catheter to be located within the aorta (22) and having an end portion (26) to be located in spaced relation from the aortic valve (28). A rotary pump member (24) is disposed within a tubular portion (38) of the end portion (26) and is operated by a rotary drive wire (32A) extending within the catheter. A flexible skirt (52) extends about the tubular portion (38) to contact the walls of the aorta (22) and ensures that substantially all the blood within the aorta flows through the pump (24) and also that the end portion (26) is maintained in a spaced apart relation from the aortic valve (28).

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
Apparatus to be located within the aorta of a living being to pump blood through the vascular system of the being in the absence of contact with the aortic valve (28), the apparatus comprising an elongate catheter (20) having an end portion (26) to be located distally of the operator and dimensioned to be received within the aorta (22) so that the end portion (26) is in proximity to the aortic valve (28), comprising pump means (24) located at the end portion (26) and drive means (32) operatively connected to the pump means (24), the end portion (26) including an inlet (40) located distally of the pump means (24) and an outlet (42) located proximately of the pump means (24), the inlet (40) and outlet (42) being in fluid communication with the aorta (22), barrier means being present to direct substantially all of the blood flowing through the aorta (22) into the inlet (40), through the pump means (24) and out through the outlet (42) characterised in that the barrier means (52) is located about the end portion (26) and is adapted to contact the wall of the aorta (22) in blood flow sealing engagement at a location longitudinally spaced from and upstream of the aortic valve (28).
  2. 5
Apparatus according to any preceding Claim characterised in that the tubular portion (38) is adapted to be expanded between a retracted configuration and an expanded configuration.
  3. 8
Apparatus according to any preceding Claim characterised in that the pump means (24) comprises at least one blade (24B) which is movable between a compacted configuration and an expanded configuration.
  4. 9
A catheter (20) to be located within the aorta (22) of a person for pumping blood through the vascular system of the person, the catheter comprising rotary pump means (24) disposed at the end (26) of the catheter (20) distal from the operator, rotary drive means (32) operatively connected to the pump means (24) extending within the catheter (20), a tube (38) extending about the pump means (24) and defining an inlet (40) for the flow of blood to the pump means (24) at one end and an outlet (42) at the other characterised by a flexible skirt (52) extending about the periphery of the tube (38), the skirt (52) being hingedly connected to the tube (38) and arranged in use to extend generally parallel to the axis of the tube (38) to sealingly engage the side walls of the aorta (22) to hold the end (26) at a position longitudinally spaced from and upstream of the aortic valve (28).
  5. 10
A catheter (20) to be placed within the body of a person characterised in that the catheter comprises an outer sleeve (20A) having a flexible tube-like end portion (26) to be located distally of the operator, the end portion (26) being expandable between a retracted condition during insertion of the catheter and an expanded condition when the end portion (26) is at the desired location within the body, a plurality of fingers disposed about the periphery of the end portion (26) and arranged to be movable to expand the end portion (26) between the retracted and expanded conditions.
