  1. 1
A display device comprising:an arrangement of a plurality of pixel display regions (82), each pixel display region comprising a number of display elements (41-49);and control means (109,110) controlling the display state of each pixel display region by operation of display elements thereof;wherein: each of said pixel display regions (82) is divided up into a predetermined first number (n) of display blocks (A - D), one of said display blocks (e.g. D) comprising a single display element (45) and the others of said display blocks (A, B, C) each comprising more than one display element (e.g. 41, 43, 47, 49) of the pixel display region;each of said display elements (e.g. 41) is defined by the intersection of a pair of strip electrodes (31,34), one from each of two opposing sets of strip electrodes (31-33, 34-36), each display element having rectangular shape;said control means (109, 110) is adapted for individual and selective operation of each display block (A - D) by the application of signals to the electrodes associated therewith for display of the display block in a selected one of a predetermined second number (m) of grey levels, said second number being two or more, thereby setting a grey level for each pixel display region (82);and the areas of said display blocks (A - D) are selected to form a geometric progression using said second number (m) as a common ratio, whereby the number of available grey levels for each pixel display region equals the second number to the power of said first number (m n ) and the intervals between adjacent ones of the grey levels are equal to each other.
  2. 5
A display device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said first number (n) is four.
