7 claims: 3 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A bar code scanner which comprises a housing (14) having a port (28) through which a beam of light for illuminating the bar code passes out of said housing and light reflected from said code passes into said housing, a laser source (42) and optics (46,48) for forming said beam from the light from said laser source (42), a photodetector (66) for receiving said reflected light and for translating it into electrical signals, electric circuitry connected to said laser source (42) and said photodetector (66), a support plate (68) carrying partly directly, partly by means of intermediate holding and fixing means (44,80,82) said laser source, said circuitry and further parts of the scanning system;characterized in that said laser source (42) is a laser diode;in that said support plate is a printed circuit board (68) carrying in the above said manner the laser diode (42), the said electric circuitry and also said optics (46,48) for forming the beam emitted from the laser diode;and in that the printed circuit board (68) together with the parts mounted thereon thus is forming a unitary structure (20) insertable into position and fixable in said housing after this structure has been assembled.
  2. 4
The scanner according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said housing (14) has a flat bottom, said printed circuit board (68) having upper and lower surfaces, said diode (42), photodetector (66) and optics (46,48) being attached to said upper surface, said lower surface being disposed upon said flat bottom.
  3. 5
A bar code scanner as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized by a collection lens (32) for focusing said beam within a given depth of focus in front of said lens upon said code and for focusing said reflected scattered light upon said detector (66), means defining an aperture (92) in a given location between said collection lens (32) and said detector (66) for the purpose of defining a constant illumination of said detector (66) by the light reflected from the bar code over said depth of field, the size and the location of said aperture (92) being chosen such that (i) it does not limit the amount of light gathered from a maximum point (A, figg. 5,6) of said depth of focus while (ii) limiting the collection of light from a minimum point (B, figg. 5,6) of said depth of focus to the photosensitive area of said detector (66).
