  2. 2
An automatic focussing apparatus for use with a camera having a photographic lens (11), comprising:focus detecting means for detecting repeatedly focus conditions of a photographic lens (11) and outputting successively focus signals corresponding to the focus conditions;drive means (M) for driving said photographic lens (11) for focus adjustment;and    first determining means for predicting an in-focus point based on the plurality of focus signals from said focus detecting means;characterized by:    second determining means for determining an in-focus point based on a focus signal from said focus detecting means;selecting means for selecting said first determining means or said second determining means;control means for controlling said drive means (M) to drive said photographic lens (11) toward the in-focus point determined by the selected determining means;auxiliary light projecting means (ILM) for projecting auxiliary light onto an object for detection operation of said focus detecting means;mode selecting means for selecting a first mode in which focus detection is performed under projection of the auxiliary light and a second mode in which focus detection is performed under non-projection of the auxiliary light, said mode selecting means selecting the first mode when a contrast of the object is lower than a predetermined level;and    select control means for controlling said selecting means to select said second determining means when the first mode is selected by said mode selecting means.
  3. 3
An automatic focussing apparatus in accordance with claim 1 or 2, characterized in that    said drive means (M) drives said photographic lens (11) based on the focus signals from said focus detecting means when the first mode is selected and discontinues the drive of said photographic lens (11) after said photographic lens (11) reaches the in-focus point.
  4. 4
An automatic focussing apparatus for use with a camera having a photographic lens (11), comprising:focus detecting means for detecting repeatedly focus conditions of a photographic lens (11) and outputting successively focus signals corresponding to the focus conditions;drive means (M) for driving said photographic lens (11) for focus adjustment;and    first determining means for predicting an in-focus point based on the plurality of focus signals from said focus detecting means;characterized by:    second determining means for determining an in-focus point based on a focus signal from said focus detecting means;selecting means for selecting said first determining means or said second determining means;control means for controlling said drive means (M) to drive said photographic lens (11) toward the in-focus point determined by the selected determining means;operation detecting means for detecting a zooming operation of the photographic lens;and    select control means for controlling said selecting means to select said second determining means when zooming operation is detected by said operation detecting means.
  5. 5
An automatic focussing apparatus in accordance with claim 4, further characterized by:in-focus detecting means for detecting the obtainment of an in-focus condition of said photographic lens (11), said operation detecting means and said select control means being enabled in response to a detecting output of said in-focus detecting means.
  6. 6
