Apparatus for the automatic adjustment of pallet workpiece support members.

Abstract

An apparatus for automatically adjusting the distance beween two support members (13, 15) for carrying workpieces (17) of different dimensions. The support members (13,15) are mounted on guides (12) that are fitted to pallets (10) that travel on conveyor transport systems (38) for automatic production/assembly lines. The support members (13, 15) have locking means (20) that frictionally secure the support members (13, 15) in place on the pallet (10) and can be unlocked for movement along the guide (12). A positioning unit (11) engages the pallet (10) so that the locking means (20) is unlocked, and the support members (13, 15) are translated, under the control of drive means (24), to the desired relative position. Means (8) for bringing a pallet (10) and the positioning unit (11) together to make the adjustment are provided. The positioning unit (11) may have two movable carriages (30, 31) and means for unlocking one or both support members (13, 15) from the guide (12), and drive means (24) for moving one or both of the carriages (30, 31) to slide one or both of the support members (13, 15) along the guides (12) into their desired positions.

  1. 1
In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having support members that are adjustable for supporting workpieces and a conveyor for advancing pallets carrying workpieces, apparatus for automatic adjustment of the position of the workpiece support members of the pallets comprising:a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions;a positioning unit having a means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members and a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions;and means for moving the pallet and positioning unit into and out of engagement so that in engagement the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating are engaged and so that out of engagement the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating are disengaged.
  2. 21
In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having different dimensions including a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions, a positioning unit having a means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members and a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions; and a means for moving the pallet and positioning unit relative to each other, a method for adjusting the distance between a first and a second support member of a pallet comprising the step of:(a) moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning means so that the means for translating the support members and the means for engaging the means for translating the support members are aligned;(b) moving the pallet and positioning means relative to each other so that the means for translating the support members and the means for engaging the means for translating are engaged;(c) actuating the means for driving the means for engaging in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving the first and second support members relative to each other to a disired location;and (d) moving the pallet and positioning means apart so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
  3. 29
In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having different dimensions including a pallet having support members that are adjustable for supporting the workpieces and a conveyor for advancing pallets carrying workpieces, wherein each pallet has a first guide, a first and second support member adapted for translation towards and away from each other along the first guide, and means for locking the first and second support members to respective selected positions along the first guide, said locking means having a release mechanism so that the first and second members may be moved along the first guide, and including a positioning unit disposed adjacent the conveyor, said positioning unit having a release means for actuating the release mechanism of a pallet for releasing the first and second members, a first carriage and a second carriage adapted respectively for engaging the first and second support members of a pallet, the first and second drive means for respectively translating the first and second carriages, parallel to the first guide of a pallet within an extreme range of positions, and means for moving a pallet and positioning unit relative to each other, a method for adjusting the distance between a first and a second support member of a pallet comprising:moving a pallet under the positioning unit;moving the first and second carriages to respective first and second positions associated with the positions of the first and second support members of the pallet moving the pallet and positioning unit together so that the release means contacts the release mechanism, thereby releasing the locking means, and so that the first and second carriages respectively engage the first and second support members;actuating the first and second drive means in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece thereby moving the first and second carriages and the first and second support members to a respective third and fourth positions for the selected workpiece dimensions;and moving the pallet and positioning unit apart so that the release means disengages from the release mechanism, thereby locking the first and second support members in place.
  4. 30
A locking and release apparatus for use in a pallet having a support member, said support member being adapted for translation along said pallet, said apparatus comprising:a receptacle in the pallet adjacent a support member;a wedge adapted for translation in a first direction and a second direction in said receptacle;a locking element located between said wedge and the support member;and a spring element adapted to urge said wedge in the first direction so that said wedge urges said locking element in frictional contact with the support member to restrain it from translation, wherein said spring element is adapted to be compressed by a force urging said wedge in a second direction so that said locking element does not frictionally restrain the support member from translation.
  5. 32
A locking and release apparatus for use in a pallet having a support member, said support member being adapted for translation along said pallet, the apparatus comprising:a receptacle in the support member adjacent the pallet;a wedge adapted for translation in a first direction and a second direction in said receptacle;a locking element located between said wedge and said pallet;a spring element adapted to urge said wedge in the first direction so that said wedge urges said locking element in frictional contact with the pallet to restrain the support member from translation, wherein said spring element is adapted further to be compressed by a force urging said wedge in the second direction so that said locking element does not frictionally restrain the support member from translation.
  6. 34
Apparatus for determining the location of a first and second support members on a pallet comprising:a shaft arranged proximate to and in alignment with the first and second support members;a first and a second movable sleeve mounted on the shaft, the first movable sleeve being associated with the first support member and having a first projection, the second movable sleeve being associated with the second support member and having a second projection;first means for moving the first sleeve along the shaft between an outermost position and an innermost position, said first means having a stop means so that when the first sleeve is being moved from its outermost position toward its innermost position and contacts the first support member it stops movement of the first sleeve;second means for moving the second sleeve along the shaft between an outermost position and an innermost position, said second means having a stop means so that when the second sleeve is being moved from its outermost position toward its innermost position and contacts the second support member it stops movement of the second sleeve;means for measuring the distance between the location of the first sleeve and its predetermined location;means for measuring the distance between the location of the second sleeve and its predetermined location;and means for determining the location of the first and second support members relative to the outermost locations of the first and second sleeves when the inward advancement of the first and second sleeves have stopped.
