EP0347584A2

Method and apparatus for removing a metallic plug from a tube by simultaneously heating and stretching the plug.

Abstract

A method and an apparatus (45) for removing metallic plugs (1) from conduits (3) such as the heat exchanger tubes (3) in a nuclear steam generator. In such tubes (3), plugs (1) formed from a cylindrical shell (7) of Inconel are radially expanded in sealing engagement with the open end of an Inconel tube (3) mounted in a tubesheet (5). The method and the apparatus (45) of the invention remove such plugs (1) by heating the shell (7) while applying a tensile force along the longitudinal axis of the plug shell (7) sufficient to elongate it.

  1. 1
A method for removing a metallic plug (1) from an elongated conduit (3), wherein the outer wall of the plug (1) is engaged against the inner wall of the conduit (3), characterized by the steps of heating the plug (1) to a temperature that lowers the tensile yield strength thereof, applying a tensile force to the plug (1) to elongate the same and thereby relaxing the engagement beween the plug (1) and the conduit (3), and then pulling the plug (1) from the conduit (3).
  2. 11
An apparatus (45) for facilitating the removal of a metallic plug (1) from a conduit (3), wherein said plug (1) is of the type that includes an elongated metallic shell (7) having a closed end (11), and open end (12), an outer wall, and an expander element (9) disposed within said shell (7) that radially expands the outer wall of the shell (7) into sealing engagement with the inner wall of the conduit (3) when drawn from the closed (11) to the open end (12) thereof, characterized by:a. a frame (140);b. a thrust fitting (105) mounted on said frame (140) for releasably securing said plug (1);and c. an electrically conductive push rod (49) mounted on said frame (140) for radially contracting the outer wall of the plug shell (7) by engaging said expander element (9) and pushing it from said open (12) to said closed end (11) of said shell (7), conducting an electrical current through said shell (7) sufficient to lessen the tensile yield thereof, and pushing the closed end (11) of said shell (7) while said thrust fitting (105) secures said shell (7) in order to apply a tensile force sufficient to elongate said plug (1) along its longitudinal axis.
