EP0343940A2

Absorbent articles with rapid acquiring absorbent cores.

Abstract

Absorbent articles such as disposable diapers, incontinent pads, sanitary napkins and the like that have absorbent cores that are suitable for rapidly acquiring and containing liquid in an especially effective and efficient manner. The absorbent core comprises a storage layer comprising hydrophilic fibrous material and discrete particles of absorbent gelling material and having an acquisition aperture so it can quickly acquire this discharged liquid; and a liquid handling layer comprising a resilient material that is moisture insensitive so to rapidly acquire liquids into itself through the acquisition aperture and distribute the liquid throughout the liquid handling layer to the storage layer. The storage layer also allows the liquid handling layer to be "drained" of the liquid that is acquired so that the liquid handling layer may have sufficient capacity to acquire and distribute subsequent loading of liquids.

10 claims: 8 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
An absorbent core suitable for use in an absorbent article, characterised in that said absorbent core comprises:a storage layer, preferably having an hourglass shape, comprising a web of hydrophilic fibrous material, preferably cellulose fibers, most preferably wood pulp fibers, and discrete particles of absorbent gelling material preferably in a fiber to particulate weight ratio of from 40:60 to 98:2, more preferably 50:50 to 91:9, said storage layer having one or more acquisition apertures;and a liquid handling layer positioned subjacent at least said acquisition aperture(s) of said storage layer, said liquid handling layer comprising a resilient material having gush handling capacity to receive quantities of body exudates, said liquid handling layer being moisture insensitive and having a percentage void volume greater than 80%.
  2. 3
An absorbent core according to either one of claims 1 and 2 wherein said resilient material comprises a resilient polymeric foam, a synthetic foam, or a batt of synthetic fibers.
  3. 4
An absorbent core according to Claim 3 wherein said batt of synthetic fibers are bonded into an open structure with a caliper, measured under a load of 0.689 kPa, greater than 0.25 mm, preferably 0.38 mm, more preferably 0.5 mm, most preferably 0.63 mm, and preferably wherein said batt of synthetic fibers has a void volume of at least 5 cm³, preferably 10 cm³, most preferably 15 cm³.
  4. 5
An absorbent core according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said liquid handling layer has a relatively lower capillarity than said web of said storage layer.
  5. 6
An absorbent core according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said one or more acquisition apertures are circular, rectangular, triangular, trapezoidal, oblong, hourglass, funnel, dogbone, fox, oval or rectangular shaped, preferably rectangular shaped.
  6. 7
An absorbent core according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said one or more acquisition apertures has a total top surface area less than 50%, preferably 35%, of the total top surface area of said storage layer, preferably wherein said acquisition aperture is positioned so that at least 75%, most preferably 100%, of the top surface area of said acquisition apertures is positioned in the front three-fourths, preferably two-thirds, more preferably the front 10% to 60%, section of said storage layer.
  7. 8
An absorbent core according to any of the preceding claims wherein said storage layer has a density of from 0.1 to 1.0 g/cm³, preferably 0.15 to 0.6 g/cm³.
  8. 9
An absorbent core according to any of the preceding claims wherein said liquid handling layer has a top surface area from 0.1 to 1.0 times, preferably 0.2 to 0.75, most preferably 0.25 to 0.5 times that of said storage layer.
  9. 10
A disposable absorbent article comprising:a liquid pervious topsheet a liquid impervious backsheet joined with said topsheet;and an absorbent core according to any of the preceding claims positioned between said backsheet and said topsheet.
