15 claims: 6 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
A weighing scale including:a split casing comprising mutually displaceable first (1) and second (2) sections,    a pair of spaced apart electrically conductive plates (5, 6;22, 23;26, 27;32, 33;36, 37;41, 42b) constituting a capacitive load cell, at least one of said plates being capable of resilient deformation, said plates being fixedly mounted to the first section (1) whilst being insulated with respect to each other;a load transmission element (10, 50) coupled to the second section (2) and adapted to bear on the capacitive load cell so that in response to a load applied to the second section the plates are resiliently displaced towards each other thereby increasing their capacitance,    signal processing means (13, 60) coupled to the capacitive load cell and responsive to a change in capacitance thereof for generating an output signal representative of the applied load, and    display means (14) for displaying data representative of the output signal;characterised in that:    the capacitive load cell further includes insulating spacing means (7) for maintaining substantially circular first portions of said plates a fixed distance apart at the circumference of said circular first portions;said load transmission element (10, 50) being juxtaposed with respect to one of said plates so as to bear annularly on said first portion about a substantially central circular second portion thereof whose diameter is less than that of said first portion.
  2. 4
A weighing scale according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the load transmission element (10, 50) is formed integral with the second section (2) of said casing.
  3. 5
A weighing scale according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the capacitive load cell (40) further includes a metallic housing (42) constituting one plate which contains the other plate (41) therein.
  4. 8
A weighing scale according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that there is further provided a biasing means (12, 45, 46) for biasing said first and second capacitor plates (5, 6, 41, 42) towards each other or further apart.
  5. 10
A weighing scale according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that said plates (26, 27, 32, 33, 36, 37) are made of sheet metal and at least one of the plates (26, 32, 36) is formed so that the no-load spacing between the two plates varies from the centre towards the periphery thereof.
  6. 15
A weighing scale according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that said casing (1, 2) has a major dimension not substantially greater than the width of an average adult shoe and wherein there is furthermore provided a microprocessor (60) for storing a transient signal resulting from a transient loading of the load cell (10, 50) and for sampling successive sections of the signal and for generating a resultant signal corresponding to the true static load.
