    A method for forming a preform layer composed of individual glass staple filaments intimately mixed with a thermoplastic fiber, consisting of dispersing in agitated, neutral water a plurality of 0.5 to 20 denier (0.55 to 22 d.tex), 1 mm to 5 cm staple length thermoplastic fibers and a quantity of wet chopped glass strand to the agitated water, said chopped glass strand consisting of bundles of numerous aligned glass fibers of length 1 cm to 8 cm and diameter 5 to 50 µm and having on their surface a sizing agent comprising a coupling agent and a film-forming agent; continuing agitation to disperse substantially the glass fiber bundles forming a homogenous filamentary slurry of thermoplastic and glass fibers, feeding the slurry to a screen in a layer, removing water from the layer; drying the layer, further heating the layer to a temperature to bond thermally the thermoplastic component fiber; and then cooling the layer to form a self-supporting preform layer. Un procédé de formage d'une couche de préforme composée de filaments individuels de libres de verre individuelles empilés intimement mélangés à une fibre thermoplastique, consistant à les étapes:- disperser dans de l'eau neutre soumise à agitation, une pluralité de fibres thermoplastiques dont les brins présentent une longueur de 1 mm x 5 cm, de 0,55 à 22 d.tex (0,5 à 20 deniers) et une certaine quantité de torons de fibres de verre coupées humides, à l'eau soumise à agitation, lesdits totons de fibres de verre coupées consistant en faisceaux de nombreuses fibres de verre alignées et présentant une longueur de 1 à 8 cm et un diamètre de 5 à 50 µm et munies à leur surface d'un agent d'encollage comprenant un agent de couplage et un agent filmogène;- continuer l'agitation afin de disperser sensiblement les faisceaux de fibres de verre formant une suspension homogène de filaments de fibres thermoplastiques et de fibres de verre;- déposer la suspension sur un tamis en une couche, évacuer l'eau de la couche;sécher la couche, chauffer la couche à une température assurant l'adhérence thermique de al libre du composant thermoplastique, et refroidir ensuite la couche pur former une couche de préforme auto-portante. Verfahren zur Bildung einer vorgeformten Schicht, bestehend aus einzelnen Glas-Stapelfilamenten, die innig mit einer thermoplastischen Faser vermischt werden, bestehend aus den Verfahrensschritten: Dispergieren unter Rühren in neutralem Wasser einer Vielzahl von thermoplastischen Fasern von 0,5 bis 20 Denier (0,55 bis 22 d.tex) und 1 mm bis 5 cm Stapellänge, und einer Menge eines nassen geschnittenen Glasstranges in dem Wasser unter Rühren, wobei der geschnittene Glasstrang aus Bündeln zahlreicher ausgerichteter Glasfasern von 1 cm bis 8 cm Länge und 5 bis 50 µm Durchmesser besteht, die auf ihrer Oberfläche eine Schlichte aufweisen, die ein Kupplungsreagens und ein filmbildendes Mittel umfasst;Fortsetzen des Rührens, um die Glasfaserbündel, die eine homogene filamentäre Aufschlämmung aus Thermoplast- und Glasfasern bilden, im wesentlichen zu dispergieren;Aufgeben der Aufschlämmung in Form einer Schicht auf ein Sieb;Entfernen des Wassers aus der Schicht;Trocknen der Schicht, außerdem Erhitzen der Schicht auf eine Temperatur, um die thermoplastische Faserkomponente thermisch zu binden;und dann Abkühlen der Schicht unter Bildung einer selbsttragenden vorgeformten Schicht.

    A self-supporting preform layer of individual reinforcing glass fibers intimately mixed with thermoplastic fibers consisting of an intimate homogeneous blend consisting of 10 to 70 percent by weight glass staple fibers substantially dispersed as individual filaments randomly arrayed in the plane of the layer and having on their surface a sizing agent, comprising a coupling agent and a film forming agent, said glass fibers having a length of 1 cm to 8 cm and a diameter of 5 to 50 µm, intimately mixed with 90 to 30 percent by weight thermoplastic staple fibers substantially dispersed as individual filaments from 0.5-20 denier (0.55-22 d.tex) having a length of 1.0 mm to 5 cm.
