  1. 1
An auditory prosthesis, comprising:programmable signal processing means (32) for filtering and amplifying auditory signals in accordance with a set of program data;memory means (38) for storing a plurality of distinct sets of program data;reprogramming means (50,54,62) for loading sets of program data from an external source (25,30) into said memory means (38) ;and    programming means (50,54,62) coupled to said signal processing means (32) for changing the set of program data from said memory means (38) used by said signal processing means (32);characterised by:    muting means (48) coupled to said programming means (50,54,62) and said signal processing means (32) for temporarily muting said signal processing means (32) while said programming means (50,54,62) changes the program data used by said signal processing means (32);said muting means (48) further being arranged to mute said signal processing means (32) while said reprogramming means (50,54,62) loads program data from said external source (25,30) into said memory means (38);and    said programming means (50,54,62) including means for automatically changing the set of program data from said memory means (38) used by said signal processing means (32) after said reprogramming means loads program data from said external source (25,30) into said memory means (38);said muting means (48) including means arranged to mute said signal processing means (32) while program data from said external source (25,30) is being loaded into said memory means (38) and to continue to mute said signal processing means (32) until the set of program data used by said signal processing means (32) has been changed.
  2. 4
A method of programming a hearing aid having programmable signal processing means (32) for filtering and amplifying auditory signals in accordance with a set of program data, the steps of the method comprising:storing a plurality of distinct sets of program data in a memory (38) in the hearing aid;responding to a program selection signal by changing the set of program data used by the signal processing means (32);and    responding to an externally generated write data signal by loading and storing program data from an external source (25,30) into said memory (38) in the hearing aid;characterised by:    temporarily muting said signal processing means (32) while changing the set of program data used by the signal processing means (32) in response to said program selection signal;said step of loading program data from an external source (25,30) including automatically changing the program data used by said signal processing means (32) after said program data from said external source (25,30) has been loaded into said memory means (38);and    muting said signal processing means (32) while program data from said external source (25,30) is being loaded into said hearing aid and continuing to mute said signal processing means (32) until the completion of said step of changing the set of program data used by said signal processing means (32).
