EP0339841A2

Photosensitive compositions and materials.

Abstract

A photohardenable composition comprises a free radical addition polymerizable or crosslinkable compound and an ionic dye-counter ion compound, said compound being capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said compound. The use of such compositions in dentistry, for producing holograms, for producing three-dimensional models and for protecting or repairing underwater surfaces, is also described.

  2. 4
A dental composition which comprises a polymerizable composition comprising:an photopolymerizable acrylate based adhesive material;and a photoinitiator;wherein said photoinitiator comprises an ionic dye-counter ion compound capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization of said photopolymerizable acrylate based adhesive material.
  3. 9
A method of dental treatment comprising the steps of:cleansing the dental surface to be repaired;applying a photopolymerizable composition to the dental surface comprising an acrylate based adhesive material, and a photoinitiator, wherein said photoinitiator comprises an ionic dye-counter ion compound capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization of said acrylate based adhesive material;exposing the dental surface to actinic radiation to initiate photopolymerization;and curing said adhesive material.
  4. 15
A method for producing holograms by photopolymer holography comprising the steps of:applying onto a surface of a substrate a composition comprising a photopolymerizable monomer, a binder, and an initiator, said initiator comprising an ionic dye-reactive counter ion compound;forming an image by illuminating the surface of said substrate with radiant light emitted from a laser;and fixing said image.
  5. 23
A photopolymerizable composition comprising:a free radical addition polymerizable or crosslinkable compound;a photoinititor comprising an ionic dye-reactive counter ion compound, said compound being capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said polymerizable or crosslinkable compound;and an ultraviolet protectorant compound.
  6. 29
A system for producing three dimensional models comprising:a computer;a computer monitor;one or more lasers capable of emitting visible light;one or more solutions, each containing a free radical addition photopolymerizable or crosslinkable monomer and a photoinitiator, said photoinitiator being capable of absorbing radiation in the visible spectrum and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said polymerizable or crosslinkable monomer, said photoinitiator comprising an ionic dye-counter ion compound, said one or more solutions being in optical contact with said one or more lasers;and one or more pistons capable of upward and downward motion located in said one or more solutions, each of said one or more pistons having a base at its upper surface;and control means for controlling the emission of visible light by said one or more lasers and the upward and downward motion of said one or more pistons.
  7. 32
A method for forming a three-dimensional model comprising the steps of:(a) generating a two-dimensional or synthetic three-dimensional model from a computer and monitor;(b) providing a laser capable of emitting actinic radiation in the visible spectrum;(c) providing a bath which contains a solution of free radical addition photopolymerizable or crosslinkable monomer and a photoinitiator capable of absorbing radiation in the visible spectrum and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said polymerizable or crosslinkable monomer, said photoinitiator comprising an ionic dye-counter ion compound, said bath also containing a piston capable of upward and downward motion, said piston having a base at its upper surface and said bath being in optical contact with said laser;(d) tracing said two-dimensional or synthetic three-dimensional image with the computer;(e) transferring the traced image to said bath by selectively actuating said laser and exposing said bath to visible light emitted by said laser to polymerize or crosslink said photopolymerizable or crosslinkable monomer and by selectively moving said piston upward or downward;and (f) forming said model in said bath.
