  1. 1
A process for decoding a stream of digital signals representing an electro-optically sensed image corresponding to a multiplicity of polygons (20) having the same shape, said polygons (20) being arranged with the geometric centers of adjacent polygons (20) lying at the vertices of a predetermined two-dimensional array, and each of said polygons (20) having in accordance with an encoding process one of at least two different optical properties, comprising the steps of:(a) performing a two-dimensional clock recovery on said sensed image by mapping two-dimensional blocks from said sensed image into corresponding locations in a transformed image in accordance with a non-linear two-dimensional, edge enhancing transformation and processing said transformed image to obtain a recovered clock signal;(b) utilizing said recovered clock signal of step (a) to locate the geometric centers of said polygons (20) to identify the optical properties of said polygons (20);and (c) decoding said polygons (20) by performing the inverse of said encoding process.
  2. 10
An apparatus for decoding a stream of digital signals representing an electro-optically sensed image of a multiplicity of polygons (20) having the same shape, said polygons arranged with the geometric centers of adjacent polygons lying at the vertices of a predetermined two-dimensional array, and said polygons (20) having in accordance with an encoding process one of at least two different optical properties, comprising:(a) means for performing a two-dimensional clock recovery on said sensed image by mapping two-dimensional blocks from said sensed image into corresponding locations in a transformed image in accordance with a non-linear two-dimensional, edge enhancing transformation and processing said transformed image to obtain a recovered clock signal;(b) means for utilizing said recovered clock signal to locate the geometric centers of said polygons (20) and identify the optical properties of said polygons;and (c) means for decoding said polygons (20) by performing the inverse of said encoding process.
