EP0336698A2

Cutting element for a rotary drill bit, and method for manufacturing such an element.

Abstract

A preform cutting element (118) for a rotary drill bit includes a layer (110a) of polycrystalline diamond material, the rear face of which is bonded to the front face of a backing layer (112a) of less hard material, such as tungsten carbide. The rear face of the backing layer is substantially greater in area than the rear face of the diamond layer. A method of manufacturing such cutting elements comprises forming an intermediate structure comprising polycrystalline diamond material (110) bonded between two outer layers (112, 114) of tungsten carbide, and then cutting the intermediate structure to provide two pieces, each of the pieces including part of the diamond material and at least a major part of a respective one of the two outer layers.

20 claims: 8 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
A preform cutting element for a rotary drill bit including a layer of superhard material (40) having a front face and a rear face, the rear face of the superhard layer being bonded to the front face of a backing layer (41) of less hard material, and the backing layer having a rear face the area of which is substantially greater than the area of the rear face of the superhard layer (40).
  2. 6
A cutting element according to any of Claims 1 to 5, wherein the front face of the superhard layer (110a) is disposed in a different plane from the front face of the backing layer (112a), so as to form a step (124b) at the location of at least part of the junction between the two layers.
  3. 9
A cutting element according to any of Claims 6 to 8, wherein the surface of the step (124b) is inclined at an obtuse angle to both said surface portions.
  4. 10
A cutting element according to any of Claims 6 to 9, wherein the junction between the step (138, Fig. 15) and the lower of the two surface portions is concavely curved.
  5. 11
A cutting element according to any of Claims 1 to 10, wherein the cutting element (118) further includes a front layer (114a) of less hard material bonded to the front face of the superhard layer (110a) and extending across at least the major part thereof.
  6. 12
A rotary drill bit comprising a bit body (10) having a shank (11) for connection to a drill string, an operating end face (12) on which are mounted a plurality of cutting elements (18), and a passage for supplying drilling fluid to the operating face of the bit for cooling and/or cleaning the cutting elements, at least certain of said cutting elements (18) each being in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 12.
  7. 13
A method of manufacturing preform cutting elements comprising the steps of forming, in a high pressure, high temperature press, an intermediate structure comprising superhard material (110, Fig. 10) bonded between two outer layers (112, 114) of less hard material, the outer layers providing opposed outer faces respectively of the intermediate structure, and then cutting the intermediate structure to provide at least two pieces (118, 120), each of said two pieces including part (110a, 110b) of the superhard material and at least a major part (112a, 114b) of a respective one of the two outer layers.
  8. 20
A rotary drill bit comprising a bit body (10) having a shank (11) for connection to a drill string, an operating end face (12) on which are mounted a plurality of cutting elements (18), and a passage for supplying drilling fluid to the operating face of the bit for cooling and/or cleaning the cutting elements, at least certain of said cutting elements (18) each being manufactured by the method according to any of Claims 13 to 19.
