On-line problem management for data-processing systems.

Abstract

Automated problem analysis and resolution of a customer data--processing system uses a central service data-processor system (130) communicating with the customer system (110) and having a data base for converting machine, software, and symptom data into instructions, hardware and software module lists, and service call schedules. The customer system detects data concerning its own configuration and problem symptoms for communication to the service system. The service system itself orders repair modules, and electronically communicates software fixes to the customer system.

  1. 1
A method for automated problem analysis and resolution of a customer data processing system for executing operating-system and application programs, said method employing a central service data processing system, and comprising:executing a resource manager (RM) program in said customer system, said RM program being adapted to maintain a resource table describing a plurality of software and hardware components residing in said customer system;executing a reliability and serviceability (RAS) program in said customer system concurrently with said operating-system and application programs, said RAS program being adapted to maintain a problem log having entries each describing a malfunction of said customer system, each of said entries containing a plurality of codes defining said problem;selecting one of said problem-log entries for action;executing at least one of a plurality of on-line problem-determination (PD) procedures stored in said customer system, said PD procedures being adapted to interrogate said resource table and to execute predetermined diagnostic routines in response thereto, at least some of said PD procedures being adapted to request said operator to perform an action with respect to said customer system, at least some of said PD procedures being adapted to request information concerning said customer system from said operator, and being responsive thereto, said PD procedures being adapted to write predetermined results of said diagnostic routines in said selected entry of said problem log;executing a system support facility (SSF) program in said customer system for converting said selected problem-log entry into a service request, for placing in said service request data identifying said customer system, and for transmitting said service request to said central service system;executing a problem-resolution program in said central service system responsive to said service request for -- searching a problem-management data base located in said central system using as a search argument data from said service request identifying said customer system and said PD procedure results, and obtaining from said data base a number of resolution records matching said search argument, a first type of said records containing instructions to said customer-system operator for resolving said problem, a second type of said records containing lists of hardware parts required to resolve said problem, and a third type of said records containing lists of program modules for resolving said problem, for resolution records of said first type, transmitting said instructions to said customer system, for resolution records of said second type, queueing a call to a service representative, said call including a list of said hardware parts from said record, and identifying said customer system, for at least some resolution records of said third type, transmitting said code modules directly to said customer system;further executing said SSF program for receiving certain data regarding the resolution of said problem from said resolution record and adding it to said selected problem-log entry, and for receiving said code modules into said customer system.
  2. 2
A system for automated problem analysis and resolution of a customer data processor, comprising:a configuration file stored in said customer processor for listing hardware and software components installed in said system;a problem log stored in said customer processor for holding a plurality of entries containing fields identifying failing components and symptoms specifying errors in said customer processor;error-detection means located within said customer processor for identifying said errors and placing information identifying said failing components into said problem log;problem-determination means located within said customer processor for diagnosing said errors and for placing said symptoms into said problem log;a service support facility for producing a service request containing information from one of said problem-log entries and from said configuration file, and further contains information identifying said customer processor;a central service processor located remotely from said customer processor and adapted to serve a large number of customer processors;a problem-management data base stored in said service processor and having entries linking a plurality of components and symptoms as search arguments to a plurality of problem resolutions as outputs, said problem resolutions including instructions for remedial action, hardware components to be replaced, and code modules for repairing software components;problem-analysis means located in said service processor for receiving said service requests, and for accessing said problem-management data base so as to extract therefrom a number of problem resolutions matching said search arguments from said service requests;a communications link for transmitting said service requests to said central service processor, and for transmitting said problem resolutions to said customer processor.
