    A codec (134) having ports for connection to first (111) and second (114, 115) communication endpoints via first (173) and second (169) transmission paths, respectively, said codec being adapted to generate first and second digital output signals in response to first and second digital input signals, respectively, said first and second input signals representing intelligence originating from said first and second communication endpoints, respectively, said first and second output signals representing intelligence destined for said second and first communication endpoints, respectively, and said first input and second output signals respectively representing in coded form the intelligence represented by said first output and second input signals, CHARACTERISED BY    first means (236) initially operative for generating at said first output a first signal indicating presence of said codec (134),    second means (237) operative in response to receipt at said second input of at least one of (a) a second signal indicating that said second transmission path includes both a means (136) for decoding said first output signal and a means (135) for embedding in said second input signal a coded version of the intelligence originating from said second endpoint, and (b) a third signal indicating that said means for embedding in said second transmission path are aware of the presence of said codec, for generating at said first output a fourth signal indicating that said codec is aware of the presence of said means for decoding and said means for embedding in said second transmission path,    third means (232, 212) operative in response to receipt at said second input of said third signal for generating as said first output signal a signal in which said first input signal is embedded and for generating as said second output signal the portion of said second input signal comprising said embedded coded version of the intelligence originating from said second endpoint and    fourth means (231, 211) operative in response to lack of receipt at said second input of said third signal for generating as said first output signal a decoded version of the intelligence represented by said first input signal and for generating as said second output signal a coded version of the intelligence represented by said second input signal.

    A codec (134) adapted to generate first and second digital output signals in response to first and second digital input signals, respectively, said first input signal being comprised of bits at a first bit rate representing encoded speech originating from a communication endpoint (111), said second output signal being comprised of a second sequence of bits at said first bit rate representing encoded speech destined for said communication endpoint, said first output and second input signals being comprised of respective sequences of multi-bit words occurring at a second bit rate greater than said first bit rate, said codec CHARACTERISED BY    means (231, 236, 211) initially operative for generating as said first output signal a decoded version of said first input signal and for generating as said second output signal an encoded version of said second input signal, said decoded version including a first synchronization pattern indicating presence of said codec,    means (232, 237) operative for thereafter generating as said first output signal a signal which includes bits from said first input signal and bits representing a second synchronization pattern indicating that said codec is aware of presence of another codec (135), the operation of this means being initiated in response to the presence in said second input signal of the first occurring of a) first and second predetermined intervals of said first synchronization pattern indicating presence of said other codec and b) said first predetermined interval of said first synchronization pattern indicating presence of said other codec followed by said second synchronization pattern indicating that said other codec is aware of presence of said codec, and    means (212) operative in response to the presence of said second synchronization pattern in said second input signal for thereafter generating as said second output signal a signal comprised of the bits in predetermined bit locations in each successive word of said second input signal.

    A telecommunications connection, including    a first codec (134),    a second codec (135),    said first and second codecs each being adapted to generate respective first and second digital output signals in response to first and second digital input signals, respectively, the first input signals of said first and second codecs representing in coded form intelligence originating from first and second communication endpoints (111, 115), respectively, the second output signals of said first and second codecs representing intelligence destined for said first and second communication endpoints, respectively, the first output signals of said first and second codecs being the second input signals of said second and first codecs, respectively, each said codec CHARACTERISED BY    first means (236) initially operative for generating at said first output a first signal indicating presence of said first codec (134),    second means (237) operative in response to detection at said second input of at least one of (a) the first signal from the second codec (135) and (b) a second signal from the second codec (135) indicating that the second codec (135) is aware of the presence of said first codec (134), for generating at said first output the second signal, and    third means (232, 212) operative only if said second signal has been detected at said second input, for generating as said first output signal of said first codec (134) a signal in a predetermined format in which the first input signal of said first codec (134) is embedded and for generating as said second output signal of said first codec (134) the portion of said second input signal of said first codec (134) comprising the coded intelligence embedded therein.

    A method carried out in a codec (134) in a system in which said codec is connected to first (111) and second (114, 115) communication endpoints via first (173) and second (169) transmission paths, respectively, and in which said codec is being adapted to generate first and second digital output signals in response to first and second digital input signals, respectively, said first and second input signals representing intelligence originating from said first and second communication endpoints, respectively, said first and second output signals representing intelligence destined for said second and first communication endpoints, respectively, and said first input and second output signals respectively representing in coded form the intelligence represented by said first output and second input signals, said method CHARACTERISED BY the steps of,    initially generating at said first output a first signal indicating presence of said codec,    in response to receipt at said second input of at least one of (a) a second signal indicating that said second transmission path includes both a means for decoding said first output signal and a means for embedding in said second input signal a coded version of the intelligence originating from said second endpoint, and (b) a third signal indicating that said means for embedding in said second transmission path are aware of the presence of said codec, generating at said first output a fourth signal indicating that said codec is aware of the presence of said means for decoding and said means for embedding in said second transmission path,    in response to lack of receipt at said second input of said third signal, generating as said first output signal a decoded version of the intelligence represented by said first input signal and generating as said second output signal a coded version of the intelligence represented by said second input signal, and    in response to receipt at said second input of said third signal, generating as said first output signal a signal in which said first input signal is embedded and generating as said second output signal the portion of said second input signal comprising said embedded coded version of the intelligence originating from said second endpoint.

    A method of operating a first codec (134) and a second codec (135) in a telecommunications connection wherein said first and second codecs are each adapted to generate respective first and second digital output signals in response to first and second digital input signals, respectively, the first input signals of said first and second codecs representing in coded form intelligence originating from first (111) and second (115) communication endpoints, respectively, the second output signals of said first and second codecs representing intelligence destined for said first and second communication endpoints, respectively, the first output signals of said first and second codecs being the second input signals of said second and first codecs, respectively, said method at each said codec CHARACTERISED BY the steps of    initially generating at said first output a first signal indicating presence of said first codec (134),    in response to detection at said second input of at least one of (a) the first signal from the second codec (135) and (b) a second signal from the second codec (135) indicating that the second codec (135) is aware of the presence of said first codec (134), generating at said first output the second signal, and    only if said second signal has been detected at said second input, generating as said first output signal of said first codec (134) a signal in a predetermined format in which the first input signal of said first codec (134) is embedded and generating as said second output signal of said first codec (134) portion of said second input signal of said first codec (134) comprising the coded intelligence embedded therein.

    A method carried out in a codec (134) adapted to generate first and second digital output signals in response to first and second digital input signals, respectively, said first input signal being comprised of bits at a first bit rate representing encoded speech originating from a communication endpoint (111), said second output signal being comprised of a second sequence of bits at said first bit rate representing encoded speech destined for said communication endpoint, said first output and second input signals being comprised of respective sequences of multi-bit words occurring at a second bit rate greater than said first bit rate, said method CHARACTERISED BY the steps of    initially generating as said first output signal a decoded version of said first input signal and initially generating as said second output signal an encoded version of said second input signal, said decoded version including a first synchronization pattern indicating presence of said codec,    thereafter generating as said first output signal a signal which includes bits from said first input signal and bits representing a second synchronization pattern indicating that said codec is aware of presence of another codec (135), this generating step being initiated in response to the presence in said second input signal of the first occurring of a) first and second predetermined intervals of said first synchronization pattern indicating presence of said other codec and b) said first predetermined interval of said first synchronization pattern indicating presence of said other codec followed by said second synchronization pattern indicating that said other codec is aware of presence of said codec, and    thereafter generating as said second output signal a signal comprised of the bits in the bit locations in each successive word of said second input signal which correspond to said predetermined bit locations of said first output signal, this generating step being initiated in response to the presence of said second synchronization pattern in said second input signal.
