Backup control method and system in data processing system.

Abstract

In a data processing system having a first external memory, a second external memory, and a control memory for storing information on data renewals in the first external memory; a system and a method are disclosed for executing in parallel with ordinary data processing, dump processing in which renewed data parts in the first external memory are copied as backup data into the second external memory with reference to the contents of the control memory. The method comprises the step of storing into the control memory, first identifier information for identifying areas of the first external memory where data items were renewed; the step of storing into the control memory, second identifier information for identifying areas of the first external memory where data items were renewed during the dump processing; and the step of erasing at completion of the dump processing, the first identifier information items except those which identify the same areas as identified by the second identifier information items. Thus, ordinary job processing and the renewals of the data items of the first external memory can be done even in the course of the data dumping processing.

  1. 1
A backup control system in a data processing system, comprising:(a) at least one first memory which stores data therein;(b) at least one host device which processes a job by the use of the data stored in said first memory, and which renews the data stored in said first memory, in consequence of the job processing;(c) at least one second memory in which at least parts of said first memory containing the renewed data items are stored as backup data;(d) a control memory which stores therein control information for managing the renewals of the data in said first memory in certain data block unit;(e) control means for storing first identifier information and second identifier information into said control memory as the control information, the first identifier information indicating that the data renewal was done in said first memory, the second identifier information indicating that the data of said first memory was renewed during a period of time for copying the data from said first memory into said second memory;and (f) means for clearing the first identifier information items from said control memory with reference to the second identifier information items when the copying of the data from said first memory into said second memory has ended.
  2. 2
A backup control system in a data processing system as defined in Claim 1, wherein said first memory is a magnetic disk device, said second memory is a magnetic tape device, and said host device is a central processing unit.
  3. 3
A backup control system in a data processing system as defined in Claim 2, wherein said control memory is a nonvolatile memory, and it stores therein a management table which is formed by pairing the first identifier information and the second identifier information in the certain data block unit.
  4. 4
A backup control system in a data processing system as defined in Claim 1 or 3, wherein said host device issues an instruction in response to the end of the copying of the data from said first memory into said second memory, and the clear means clears the first identifier information items from said control memory in response to the instruction.
  5. 5
A backup control system in a data processing system as defined in Claim 1, comprising a control device which serves to control reading and writing data from and into said first memory, and in which said control means, the clear means and said control memory are included.
  6. 6
A backup control system in a data processing system as defined in Claim 3, wherein the first memories and the second memories are comprised, the respective first memories are previously held in a corresponding relationship with the second memories into which data in said first memories are copied, and the management tables are formed according to the corresponding relationship.
  7. 7
A backup control system in a data processing system as defined in Claim 6, wherein said management tables are formed within the common control memory.
  8. 8
In a data processing system having a first memory and a second memory which store data; a dump control method wherein at least parts of the first memory containing renewed data are copied into the second memory as backup data, comprising:(a) the first step of managing areas of said first memory where the data items were renewed, in predetermined block unit;(b) the second step of managing it in predetermined block unit that the data items of said first memory were renewed in a period of time for dump processing;and (c) the third step of managing data items to be dumped later, in predetermined block unit on the basis of the management of said second step after the dump processing has ended.
  9. 9
A dump control method as defined in Claim 8, wherein:said first step includes the step of storing first identifier information into a control memory, the first identifier information items identifying areas of said first memory where the data items were renewed;said second step includes the step of storing second identifier information into said control memory, the second identifier information items identifying areas of said first memory where the data items were renewed during the dump processing;said third step includes the step of clearing the first identifier information items from said control memory in accordance with the second identifier information items;and at least the data items of blocks left by said third step are set as subjects of next dump processing.
  10. 10
A dump control method as defined in Claim 9, wherein said step of storing the second identifier information includes the step of storing other identifier information for identifying the same areas as identified by the first identifier information, into said control memory each time the first identifier information item is stored, at least, during the dump processing, and the step of assuring that the other identifier information items have been erased, at start of the dump processing, whereby the other identifier information items existing at completion of the dump processing form the second identifier information.
  11. 11
A dump control method as defined in Claim 10, wherein the first identifier information and the other identifier information are specified values of first and second bits, respectively, at a location of said control memory corresponding to the area of said first memory where the data renewal was done.
  12. 12
A dump control method as defined in Claim 10 or 11, wherein said third step is executed according to a command which is issued by a host device for said first and second memories after the completion of the dump processing has been acknowledged.
  13. 13
In a system having a first memory and a second memory which store data therein; a method of dumping the data of the first memory into the second memory, comprising:(a) the first step of dumping all the data items of said first memory into said second memory;(b) the second step of dumping only parts of said first memory containing renewed data items, into said second memory;(c) the third step of managing whether or not the data items of said first memory were renewed during processing of said second step;and (d) the fourth step of dumping only parts containing the data items renewed during the dump processing, into said second memory.
