  1. 1
Capability domain control mechanism in a computer system comprising a plurality of general purpose registers (GR 20) connected to a central processor for holding at preselected times a first address component for virtual address translation;a plurality of access registers (AR 22) connected to the central processor and having each of the access registers associated with a corresponding one of the general purpose registers, each access register containing means (ALET) for identifying a second address component to be associated with said first address component in the general purpose register associated with said access register;virtual address translation means (DAT 18) for using said first and second components for virtual address translation to obtain real addresses, characterized by a first access list (25) containing a plurality of access list entries, each valid entry associated with an address to an address space, each access list entry being capable of being indexed by the contents (ALET) of an access register (AR), the access list being representative of a first domain of address spaces having predetermined capabilities;a second access list (24) containing a plurality of access list entries, each valid entry associated with an address to an address space, each access list entry being capable of being indexed by the contents of an access register (AR), the access list means being representative of a second domain of address spaces having predetermined capabilities;first and second indicating means (26, 27) each for pointing to one of said access lists (25, 24), one of said first and second indicating means being selected in response to the contents of an access register (AR);and memory means (AST 30) for containing address space number second table entries;means for identifying a second table entry (ASTE) in response to the contents of said access list entry from said selected access list and for obtaining the second table entry (ASTE), the content of which forms said second component for virtual address translation.
  2. 4
Method for controlling capability domains in a computer system having a central processor unit, a plurality of general purpose registers (GR20) connected to the central processor and a plurality of access registers (AR22) connected to the central processor and having each of the access registers (AR22) associated with a corresponding one of the general purpose registers (GR20), comprising the steps of determining if said general purpose register (GR20) holds at preselected times a first address component for virtual address translation;determining in response to the contents of the access register (AR22) associated with the general purpose register (GR20) an access list pointing identifier which points to one of a plurality of access lists (24, 25) where said access list represents a capability domain of address spaces, if said general purpose register does hold a first address component;determining in response to the contents of the access register (AR22) associated with the general purpose register (GR20) an access list entry identifier, if the general purpose register does hold a first address component, each access list entry being associated with an address to an address space;selecting an access list representative of a capability domain in response to said access list pointing identifier;selecting in response to said access list entry identifier an access list entry from said selected access list;determining in response to the contents of said selected access list entry an entry in a second table means (AST 30), said second table entry containing a second address component for determining real addresses from virtual addresses when used with said first component;determining from said first and said second address components a real address.
  3. 8
Method of one of claims 4 - 7, characterized in that the computer system has control registers and in which said access list pointing identifier selects a control register having the address and size of the access list contained therein.
  4. 10
Method of one of claims 4 - 9, characterized in that the capabilities of a user may be changed by changing from a first domain to a second domain.
  5. 11
Method of one of claims 4 - 9, characterized in that the capabilities of all users of a domain are changed by changing the domain access list capabilities.
  6. 12
Capability domain control mechanism according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterized by a first control register for containing information to access said first access list in response to the contents of an access list entry token (ALET) from an access register (AR);a second control register for containing information to access said second access list in response to the contents of an access list entry token (ALET) from an access register (AR);selecting means for selecting said first control register means or said second control register means in response to the contents of an access list entry token (ALET) from an access register (AR) to determine whether said first access list means or said second access list means is the selected access list for access list entries;means for obtaining an access list entry fom said selected access list corresponding to an access list entry token (ALET) in an access register (AR) means at the time the associated GPR means is activated in an adressing operation.
  7. 13
Capability domain control mechanism according to one of claims 1 to 3 or 12, characterized in that one of said access lists is representative of a secondary address space access list (SSAL) domain having the capabilities of a secondary address space.
