Coextrusion method.

Abstract

Apparatus and method for fabricating films, especially films containing vinylidene chloride copolymer, enable the process to be performed on a continuous basis over an extended period of time greater than a few days, typically for at least 2 weeks between shut downs for cleaning the equipment of polymer degradation products. The apparatus comprises a coextrusion feedblock (20) in combination with an annular extrusion die (10) having a crosshead mandrel (11), and means (22) for conveying the exit stream (24) from the feedblock (20) to the die (10). The particular apparatus combination especially reduces the rate of carbon buildup in the extrusion apparatus during extrusion of VDC copolymer, such that the extrusion process can be operated for a longer time between shutdowns for cleaning and maintenance of the die. In general, the method is able to produce tubular films having more layers than an annular extrusion die (10) has annular orifices (31).

  2. 5
Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the multiple layer structure comprises opposing inner and outer surfaces, with respect to the tube shape, and the said die includes means for joining first and second additional layers (42, 40) of polymeric material to respective ones of the inner and outer surfaces.
  3. 6
A method of producing a plurality of in-feed streams of molten polymer into a multiple layer structure in the shape of a tube, said method comprising:(a) feeding said in-feed streams (A, B) of molten polymer into a coextrusion feedblock (20), which receives them and combines then into a multiple layer exit stream (24), the exit stream comprising at least 3 layers including a first or interior layer (B) disposed between second and third ones (A, A) of said at least 3 layers, the said interior layer (B) extending to opposing outer surfaces (25, see Fig. 3) of the exit stream;(b) conveying the multiple layer exit stream (24) from said feedblock (20) to an annular crosshead mandrel (11) in an annular extrusion die (10);and(c) forcing said exit stream (24) through the die (10) whereby the die forms the exit stream into the said multiple layer structure.
  4. 10
A method according to any of claims 6 to 9, wherein the exit stream is forced through a die wherein the circumference of its annular mandrel is greater than 80 centimeters.
  5. 11
A method according to any of claims 6 to 10, wherein the said multiple layer structure comprises an outer surface, with respect to said tube shape, and the method includes extruding an additional layer through the die and joining the additional layer to said outer surface.
  6. 12
A method according to any of claims 6 to 10, wherein the said multiple layer structure comprises opposing inner and outer surfaces, with respect to said tube shape, and the method includes extruding first and second additional layers through the die and joining the first and second additional layers to respective ones of the said inner and outer surfaces.
  7. 13
A method of producing a tubular multiple layer film in a die (10) having at least one annular opening (31) therein for extrusion of tubular film therefrom, comprising the steps of:(a) feeding a plurality of in-feed streams (A, B) of molten polymer into a coextrusion feedblock (20) which receives and combines the in-feed streams into a multiple layer exit stream (24) comprising a plurality of layers, each of said layers (A, B) extending to opposing outer surfaces (25, see Fig. 3) of said exit stream (24);(b) conveying the said multiple layer exit stream (24) from the feedblock (20) to an annular crosshead mandrel (11) in an annular extrusion die (10);and(c) forcing the exit stream through the die to an annular orifice (31) thereof, and thereby fabricating the exit stream into an extruded tubular multiple layer film, whereby the film extruded from the annular orifice (31) of said die contains a plurality of layers.
  8. 15
A method according to any of claims 6 to 12, wherein the multiple layer structure formed from the said exit stream comprises a junction, seam or weld line (34) extending through the multiple layer structure, and including extending through at least the said second, first, and third layers, in a continuous path.
  9. 18
A method of using a tubular die having one or more annular extrusion orifices (31) to produce a film having more layers than the die (10) has annular extrusion orifices, the method comprising feeding a plurality of in-feed streams (A, B) of molten polymer into a coextrusion feedblock (20) which receives and combines the said in-feed streams into a single exit stream (24) comprising a plurality of layers, each of the layers extending to opposing outer surfaces (25, see Fig. 3) of said exit stream (24);conveying the multiple layer exit stream from said feedblock (20) to a crosshead mandrel (11) in the die;and forming the exit stream through the die in a single channel and thereby converting the exit stream into an extruded tubular multiple layer extrudate, whereby the film extruded from the said one or more annular orifices of said die contains more layers than the said die has annular extrusion orifices.
