EP0321694A2

Data processing system using incompatible central processing unit/operating system combinations.

Abstract

A data processing system is disclosed in which the central processing units incorporated therein operate under control of a plurality of (generally incompatible) operating systems. The central processing units have a peer relationship in which each central processing unit has access to all of the system resources, such as main memory locations and input/output channels. Files of currently allocated resources are maintained by each central processing unit. The currently allocated resources can be altered as the requirements of the central processing units change. Apparatus and method are disclosed wherein, once a peer processing relationship is established among the central processing unit/operating system combinations, a user can execute software programs operating under any of the data processing system central processing unit/operating system combinations thereby taking advantage special execution capabilities of selected central processing unit/operating system combinations.

  1. 1
A data processing system comprising:data processing system resources including a main memory unit;a plurality of central processing units, at least one said central processing units operating under control of different operating systems wherein a one central processing unit/operating system is not compatible with a second central processing unit/operating system combination;and transfer means for permitting a user accessing said second central processing unit/operating system combination to access said one central processing unit/operating system and execute a program on said second central processing unit/operating system combination.
  2. 2
The data processing system of Claim 1 wherein said transfer means automatically transfers said user to said second central processing unit/operating system combination at a conclusion of said program.
  3. 3
The data processing system of Claim 2 wherein said program can be a single instruction.
  4. 4
The data processing system of Claim 1 further comprising:compatibility means for permitting said one central processing unit/operating system combination to access said second data processing unit/operating system combination and said data processing system resources.
  5. 5
The data processing system of Claim 4 wherein said compatibility means includes locations in main memory accessible to said one and to said second central processing unit/operating system combination for communication therebetween.
  6. 6
The data processing system of Claim 5 wherein a data processing user can select said one central processing unit/operating system combination, said second central processing unit/operating system combination, or both said one and said second central processing unit/operating system combination with which to interact with said data processing system.
  7. 7
The data processing system of Claim 6 wherein selection of said both one and second combinations causes said user to interact with said data processing system user.
  8. 8
In a data processing system, a method of permitting a data processing user to interact with a first central processing unit/operating system combination and a second central processing unit/operating system combination, said first combination and data processing resources being incompatible with said second combination, comprising the steps of:associating with said first and said second combination a file listing all data processing system resources available to said associated combination;coupling interface means between said data processing system and said second combination to permit an orderly exchange of signal groups therebetween;when said first combination can execute a first procedure not available to said second combination, providing an execution procedure permitting said first combination to execute said first procedure in response to a request from said second combination, wherein said coupling step and said providing step permit said first and said second combination to access all data processing system resources;establishing a communication path between said first and said second combination;and implementing a command permitting a data processing system user interacting with said first combination to interact with said second combination.
  9. 9
The method of permitting a data processing user to interact with a first central processing unit/operating system combination and a second central processing unit/operating system combination of Claim 8 further comprising the step of:dynamically allocating said data processing system resources using said communication path.
  10. 10
The method of permitting a data processing user to interact with a first central processing unit/operating system combination and a second central processing unit/operating system combination of Claim 9 further comprising the step of:allowing said first and said second combination to access a common area in a main memory unit.
  11. 11
The method of permitting a data processing user to interact with a first central processing unit/operating system combination and a second central processing unit/operating system combination of Claim 10 wherein said allocating step includes the step of allocating a data processing system user terminal said first or to said second combination in response signals from said data processing system user terminal.
  12. 12
The method of permitting a data processing user to interact with a first central processing unit/operating system combination and a second central processing unit/operating system combination of Claim 11 wherein said implementing step further includes the step of automatically returning to interaction with said first combination after completion of interaction with said second combination.
  13. 13
The method of permitting a data processing user to interact with a first central processing unit/operating system combination and a second central processing unit/operating system combination of Claim 12 further comprising the step providing said first and said second combination with access verification apparatus.
  14. 14
A data processing system comprising:data processing system resources comprising at least a main memory unit and a user terminal;a first central processing unit/operating system combination for interaction with said data processing system resources;a second central processing unit/operating system combination incompatible with said first combination;compatibility means coupled to said second combination, said compatibility means permitting said second combination to be operably coupled to said first combination and said data processing system resources, wherein said first combination and said second combination access to all said data processing system resources;and a first procedure responsive to a command from said user terminal for switching interaction of said user terminal from said first combination to said second combination.
  15. 15
The data processing system of Claim 14 wherein said first combination and said second combination along with said compatibility means each includes access means for preventing generation of addresses not assigned to associated combination.
  16. 16
The data processing system of Claim 15 further including allocation means for dynamically assigning said data processing system resources between said first and said second combination.
