14 claims: 7 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A method of marking a fluorocarbon surface comprising forming it of or coating it with a reflective fluorocarbon polymer composition characterised by applying a light-transmitting fluorocarbon polymer composition comprising ETFE or ECTFE as a surface coating over the surface of the reflective composition, and marking the coated surface by laser printing.
  2. 2
A method as claimed in Claim 1 in which the reflective fluorocarbon polymer composition is a white pigmented one.
  3. 3
A method as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the light-transmitting fluorocarbon polymer composition is translucent and 10-50% of incident radiation is scattered at least once within the light-transmitting layer.
  4. 4
A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims comprising forming the light-transmitting fluorocarbon polymer composition of ETFE.
  5. 5
A method as claimed in Claim 4 in which the reflective fluorocarbon polymer composition comprises PTFE comprising applying a primer coating of mixed ETFE and PTFE in dispersion form before the PTFE is sintered.
  6. 6
A method as claimed in Claim 4 in which the reflective fluorocarbon polymer composition comprises FEP comprising applying a primer coating of mixed ETFE and FEP in dispersion form before the FEP is sintered.
  7. 7
A method in accordance with any one of the preceding claims of marking the fluorocarbon surface of an insulated electric wire or cable.
  8. 8
A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the light-transmitting fluorocarbon layer has a degree of translucency corresponding to that achievable by incorporation of 5 - 6% by weight of titanium dioxide of mean particle size 0.8nm.
  9. 9
An article having a fluorocarbon surface marked by the method claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
  10. 10
An article having a surface formed of or coated with a reflective fluorocarbon polymer composition characterised by a surface coating of a light-transmitting fluorocarbon polymer composition comprising ETFE or ECTFE and by laser-printed markings thereon.
  11. 14
A fluorocarbon surface suitable for both laser printing and ink jet printing comprising an underlying surface of white pigmented PTFE, a primer coating of mixed PTFE and ETFE and a light-transmitting surface layer of ETFE.
