Fluid delivery control and monitoring apparatus.

Abstract

A fluid delivery monitoring and control apparatus for use in a medication infusion system is designed for use with a disposable fluid pathway that incorporates a sterile cassette (12) containing pumping elements (28, 30, 32) and sensor interfaces. The apparatus comprises a multi-segment drive mechanism (14), controller (18) and monitoring system. Fluid pumping is accomplished by controlling DC motors (36) in the drive mechanism, each of which is coupled to two valves (28,32) and a reciprocating piston (30) for an individual pumping channel in the cassette. The motor is geared down to provide an approximate maximum speed and torque. A cam (38) sequentially actuates an inlet valve (28), piston (30), and an outlet valve (32) in the cassette. A range of fluid delivery rates is achieved by periodically sending pulses to the motor. The output flow rate of the pump is maintained by the digital feedback controller which uses a closed-loop feedback controller (60) to provide accurate regulation. At regular time intervals, the controller computes the motor voltage pulse width based upon feedback information from an encoder (46).

11 claims: 3 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
Fluid delivery, monitoring and control apparatus for use in a medication infusion system employing a disposable fluid pathway and cassette (12), the apparatus being characterised by drive means (14) for actuating pistons and valves in the fluid pathway and cassette, operatively connected to the cassette;monitoring means (16) having inputs (20) from sensors in the cassette and in the drive means;and control means (18) having inputs from the monitoring means, from the drive means, and from command signals (24) and an output connected to control the drive means.
  2. 9
Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 2 to 8, characterised in that each motor comprises an anti-backdrive clutch arrangement for braking.
  3. 10
Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 2 to 9, characterised in that the encoder means comprise;an encoder disc (48) mounted on the output shaft, the disc having a plurality of fiducial indicia (55) on a face thereof corresponding to a "home" position, and defining segments corresponding to a delivery cycle, a valve-to-fill cycle, a fill stoke, a valve-to-deliver cycle and a predetermined time (56) before the beginning of the delivery cycle for braking;and means responsive to the indicia for producing electrical signals as the disc rotates.
