Elastomer modified epoxies.

Abstract

Epoxy and epoxy novolak resins are impact modified by adding an effective amount of a acrylamide diene nitrile rubber terpolymer to the resin. In a preferred embodiment, the acrylamide diene nitrile rubber includes an acid or ester group attached to the acrylamide portion of the polymer generally through a thiol group. The liquid terpolymer is reacted in the presence of acid catalysts with the resin to provide impact modification.

  1. 1
An impact modified thermoset resin comprising either epoxy resin or epoxy novolak resin and an acrylamide diene nitrile random terpolymer which is dispersible in the resin at about less than 30°C, the acrylamide diene nitrile terpolymer being provided in an amount effective to provide impact modification of the thermosetting resin.
  2. 4
A resin as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the polymer has a number average molecular weight of less than about 12,000.
  3. 5
A resin as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the amount effective to provide impact modification comprises from about 3 to about 50%
  4. 6
A resin as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 5 wherein the acrylamide is N-(R-thiomethyl) acrylamide.
  5. 7
A resin as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 5 wherein the acrylamide is N-(R-oxymethyl) acrylamide.
  6. 9
A resin as claimed in any preceding claim further comprising 0.2 to 10% of a mercapto modifier;the mercapto modifier being selected from the group consisting of mercapto C₃-C₁₀ alkyl acids and C₁-C₁₀ alkyl ester derivatives thereof.
  7. 10
In combination an epoxy resin and an acrylamide diene nitrile terpolymer modifier the modifier having a molecular weight effective to provide the modifier in a liquid state at less than about 20°C the modifier comprising the free radical polymerization of:3 to 15% HPMA 60 to 80% isoprene and 17 to 23% acrylonitrile.
  8. 11
An epoxy impact modifier formed by reacting a prepolymer comprising 3 to 15% N-(R-oxymethyl) acrylamide:60 to 80% diene monomer;17 to 23% nitrile monomer selected from the group consisting of methacrylonitrile and acrylonitrile having a number average molecular weight effective to provide a liquid polymer at 20°C with a mercapto modifier said mercapto modifier selected from the group consisting of mercapto C₃-C₁₀ alkyl acids and C₁-C₁₀ alkyl ester derivatives thereof said composition formed by reacting said modifier with said polymer at less than about 175°C for time less than about 1 hour to provide a mercapto carboxyl modified prepolymer.
