25 claims: 12 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A semiconductor system for emulating the characteristics of a vacuum tube amplifier, comprising:an input means (60, 61;70, 71;370) for receiving an input signal, a clipping means (62, 72;122 to 124;330 to 334;351 to 355;451, 452;466 to 468) responsive to a signal supplied by the input means, and an output means (36;63;73) for generating an output signal of the system, characterised by feedback means (336 to 345;357, 358;458 to 464) responsive to a signal processed by said clipping means for supplying a feedback signal (L, 346) to the input side of the clipping means.
  2. 5
A system according to any of claims 2 to 4, wherein the feedback means includes filter means (341 to 345;458 to 464).
  3. 8
A system according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the output means includes a filter (63;73) responsive to said signal processed by the clipping means, for supplying a filtered signal to said feedback means.
  4. 9
A system according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein said feedback means (357, 358) has non-linear signal transmission characteristics.
  5. 11
A system according to any of claims 1 to 10, wherein the input means includes means (60;70) for generating even harmonics of said input signal.
  6. 15
A system according to any of claims 1 to 14, wherein said input means includes bass and treble signal level controllers (25) .
  7. 16
A system according to any of claims 1 to 15, including signal transmission means (270 to 293;300 to 323) having a gain which increases in response to an increasing amplitude of an input signal of said transmission means.
  8. 19
A system according to any of claims 1 to 18, including filter means (379;390 to 395;407 to 409) for generating an equalised output signal of the system.
  9. 20
A system according to any of claims 1 to 19, including a preamplifier (371), a first distortion synthesiser (372), tone control means (373) and a second distortion synthesiser (374).
  10. 21
A system according to any of claims 1 to 20, wherein said input means includes conversion means (401) for converting an analogue input signal to a digital input signal, said system further comprising a digital processor (402).
  11. 24
A system according to any of claims 1 to 23, wherein said input means includes a multiplexer (400) for selecting said input signal out of a plurality of signals which are provided to the system.
  12. 25
A system according to any of claims 1 to 15, including gain means (270 to 293;300 to 320) with a gain that changes without clipping in response to the amplitude of signals in the gain means.
