High resolution light pen for use with graphic displays.

Abstract

A high resolution light pen is disclosed for use with graphic displays. More particularly, a light pen is disclosed having a collimation tube slidably mounted within a housing. The collimation tube includes an axially extending channel having a non-reflective surface. A photodetector is fixably mounted within the housing aligned with the channel. A lens is mounted adjacent the front end of the channel and has a focal length equal to the spacing between the lens and an aligned pixel of the video screen. By this arrangement, all light rays emanating from an aligned pixel and passing through the lens are refracted axially along the channel and directed to the photodetector thereby maximizing the input thereto. The subject invention further includes a new and improved discrimination circuit for determining valid input signals from the light pen and producing an interrupt signal at a time substantially independent of the amplitude and slope of the input signals. In accordance with the subject invention, each input signal is compared with an upper threshold level to determine if a valid signal has been detected. In addition, each input pulse is compared to a lower threshold level for timing purposes. The result of the comparison with the lower threshold level is delayed and supplied to a gate means with the output of the first comparison. The gate functions to produce an output signal when the results of both comparisons received are simultaneously positive thereby indicating the validity of the input pulse at a time independent of the amplitude of the pulse whereby the effects of jitter are reduced.

7 claims: 2 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A discrimination circuit for determining whether input pulses from a photodetector are valid signals and producing an output signal at a time substantially independent of the amplitude of the input pulses, said circuit comprising:first comparator means (74) for receiving said input pulses and for generating a first signal whenever the voltage of an input pulse exceeds a first threshold level;second comparator means (76) for receiving said input pulses and for generating a second signal when the voltage of an input pulse exceeds a second threshold level, said second threshold level being lower than said first threshold level;delay means (84) connected to said second comparator means for delaying said second signal a fixed amount;and gate means (90) operatively connected to said first comparator means and said delay means, said gate means generating an output pulse whenever said gate means receives the first and second signals from said delay means and said first comparator means simultaneously, whereby said output pulse is generated only when said input pulse exceeds said first threshold level and at a time independent of when said input pulse exceeds the first threshold level.
  2. 7
A method of determining whether an input pulse is a valid signal and producing an output pulse at a time substantially independent of the amplitude of the input pulse, said method comprising:comparing the input pulse with first and second threshold levels, said first threshold level being greater than said second threshold level;generating a first signal whenever the input pulse exceeds the first threshold level;generating a second signal whenever the input pulse exceeds the second threshold level;supplying the first signal directly to a gate means and supplying the second signal to said gate means only after a fixed period of time;and generating an output pulse whenever the first and second signals are being simultaneously received at said gate means.
