Booster.

Abstract

An apparatus and method for selecting a number of cellular radio channels to be boosted in a given geographic area provides either F1-F1 or F1-F2 operation. The signals can be boosted at the same frequency with input to output isolation being achieved by the use of directive transmit and receive antennas (18, 20) physically positioned to achieve sufficient isolation. Each signal is individually filtered, amplified and recombined for transmission. Any number of signals may be accommodated depending upon the number of retransmission channels available. Apparatus is also provided to retransmit a signal at a different frequency from that at which it is received.

  1. 1
An apparatus for receiving and retransmitting one or more selected electro-magnetic signals characterized by:means for sensing one or more selected signals;means for forming a list identifying one or more of said selected signals as candidates for retransmission pursuant to a predetermined list forming criterion;means for selecting one or more members from said list pursuant to a predetermined retransmission criterion;and means for retransmitting said selected members.
  2. 2
An apparatus as in claim 1 including:means for determining if a sensed signal should be considered for retransmission and for identifying one or more selected signals.
  3. 3
An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said selecting means includes means for comparing power levels of members from said list to one another and for selecting a predetermined number of members of said list having the highest power levels.
  4. 4
An apparatus as in claim 1 with said forming means including means for determining if each of said sensed selected signals has a characteristic that exceeds a predetermined first threshold and for including an identifier of at least some of said signals in said list.
  5. 5
An apparatus as in claim 4 with said forming means including means for determining if each of said sensed selected signals has a characteristic that exceeds a predetermined second threshold.
  6. 6
A method of receiving a plurality of electro-magnetic signals and for retransmitting selected ones thereof characterized by the steps of:sensing a plurality of electro-magnetic signals;comparing a first indicium of each sensed signal to a predetermined threshold;recording a second indicium for each sensed signal that exceeds the threshold;selecting one or more sensed signals from among the recorded second indicia;and retransmitting only the selected one or more sensed signals.
  7. 7
A method as in claim 6 including:determining, based on a preset criterion which of the sensed signals should be compared with the threshold.
  8. 8
A method as in claim 7 including:determining if the number of recorded second indicia for a given sensed signal, out of a preselected number of comparisons, exceeds a preselected value;and recording an identifier of the given sensed signal in response that determination.
  9. 9
A method as in claim 8 including:forming a running average of values of the recorded second indicia of the given sensed signal;and recording the value of the running average.
  10. 10
A method as in claim 9 including:comparing the values of the running averages of a plurality of selected of the sensed signals;and selecting one or more signals for retransmission as a result of the value comparison.
  11. 11
A method of extending coverage of a fixed radio transmitter-receiver to selected mobile transceivers in a predetermined graphical area, the method characterized by the steps of:providing a plurality of signal repeaters;spacing the signal repeaters throughout at least part of the geographical area such that at least one repeater is in radio communication with the transmitter and a second repeater is in radio communication with the first repeater;and sensing a signal from a mobile transceiver at the second repeater, retransmitting that signal to the first repeater, sensing that signal at the first repeater and retansmitting it to the fixed receiver.
  12. 12
A method of extending coverage as in claim 11 including:sensing a signal from a mobile transceiver at the first repeater and retransmitting that signal from the repeater to the fixed transmitter-receiver.
  13. 13
A.method of extending coverage as in claim 11 wherein transmission between the fixed transmitter-receiver and the first repeater takes place at a first set of frequencies and transmission between the first repeater and the second repeater takes place at a second set of frequencies.
  14. 14
A method of extending coverage as in claim 13 wherein each of the repeaters senses and repeats a control channel transmitted by an adjacent upstream repeater or the fixed transmitter receiver.
  15. 15
A method of extending coverage as in claim 13 wherein each repeater transmits audio to an adjacent mobile receiver at the same frequency as does every other repeater.
  16. 16
A method of extending coverage as in claim 15 wherein each repeater receives audio from an adjacent mobile transmitter at the same frequency as does every other repeater.
  17. 17
An apparatus for extending coverage of a fixed radio transmitter-receiver to selected mobile transceivers in a predetermined graphical area, the apparatus characterized by:a plurality of signal repeaters spaced throughout at least part of the geographical area such that at least one of said repeaters is in radio communication with the transmitter-receiver and a second of said repeaters is in radio communication with said first repeater with said second repeater including means for sensing a signal from a mobile transceiver and means for retransmitting that signal to said first repeater, said first repeater including means for sensing that signal and means for retansmitting it to the fixed transmitter-receiver.
