7 claims: 5 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
An ultrasonic liquid detector comprising an ultrasonic sound generator (54) and an ultrasonic sound receiver (56) disposed from one another so as to receive a liquid carrying member (22) therebetween, characterized in that each of said sound generator (54) and sound receiver (56) includes a substrate (58) and a conductive layer (60), said conductive layer (60) having at least two regions (64,66) electrically isolated from each other, a piezoelectric chip (72) placed in electrical contact over at least a portion of a first region (64) of said conductive layer (60), and a conductive member (74) extending between said piezoelectric chip (72) and a second region (66) of said conductive layer (60), whereby, when an electrical signal is applied between said first region (64) and said second region (66), the piezoelectric chip (72) on the sound generator (54) is excited causing ultrasonic sound to be generated, and whereby the amplitude of the ultrasonic sound received by said piezoelectric chip (72) on said sound receiver (56) is electrically detected by monitoring the electrical signal produced between said first region (64) and said second region (66) of the conductive layer (60) of said sound receiver (56), the amplitude of the ultrasonic sound received increasing substantially when liquid is present in said carrying member (22).
  2. 4
The ultrasonic detector according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized in that it includes a push connector pin (76,78) mounted on each of said regions (64,66) to which electrical leads can be connected.
  3. 5
The ultrasonic detector according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized in that said substrate (58) is preferably made of glass material.
  4. 6
The ultrasonic detector according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized in that said substrate (58) is mounted within said housing member (26) so as to directly contact the liquid carrying member (22), thereby providing a good acoustic contact between said liquid carrying member (22) and said substrate (58).
  5. 7
The ultrasonic detector according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized in that said sound receiver (56) is having one or more resonant frequencies, said sound receiver (56) being disposed to receive acoustic signals transmitted across a conduit (20), said sound generator (54) generating said acoustic signals across said conduit (20) in a range embracing the resonant frequencies of said sound receiver (56); said device including :oscillator means (300) for continuously sweeping electrical signals across said range and applying said electrical signals to said sound generator (54);and    a tuned load (L ₁,C₁,72) having an element (72) responsive to said electrical signals to produce said acoustic signals within said range for transmission to and reception by said sound receiver (56).
