Belt synchronization controls in a print engine for color electrophotography.

Abstract

In a print engine for color electrophotography using a photodetector belt (11) and a seamless transfer belt (12) on which a composite image is built up, the two belts are synchronized. Synchronization of the two belt drives enhances image registration. A tension mechanism used in conjunction with the belts prevents rapid changes in the belt dimensions. A transfer belt cleaner system (40) is synchronized with the belt drives such that excess toner is not left in the imaging area of the transfer belt.

  1. 1
In a print engine for use in a color electrophotographic system of the type including imaging means for selectively creating an image on a photosensitive receptor, the improvement comprising:first transfer means carrying said receptor thereon and have a characteristic first length;first reference means for detecting passage of a first predetermined location said first transfer means past a first predetermined reference point and for providing a first reference signal in response thereto;second transfer means having a characteristic second length, said second length nominally being an integer submultiple of said first length;second reference means for detecting passage of a second predetermined location on said second transfer means past a second predetermined reference point and for providing a second reference signal in response thereto;first drive means for driving said first transfer means about a plurality of rollers, each roller of said plurality of rollers having an axis of rotation;second drive means for driving said second transfer means along a second predetermined path comprising a contact area wherein said second transfer means contacts said first transfer means and said first transfer means wraps around a particular one of said plurality of rollers;and       control means connected to said first and second reference means for synchronizing said second drive means to said first drive means in response to said first and second reference signals such that said first transfer means and said second transfer means have a common predetermined angular velocity at said contact area, said predetermined angular velocity being measured with respect to said axis of rotation of said particular one of said plurality of rollers.
  2. 2
The improvement recited in Claim 1 wherein:said second transfer means has a bulk resistivity in the range of 10⁸ to 10¹² ohms-centimeters.
  3. 3
In a print engine for use in a color electrophotographic system of the type including means for selectively focusing light onto a photosensitive receptor carried on a first rotating closed belt, means for creating an electrostatic image on an imaging area on said photosensitive receptor in response to said light, and means for transferring said electrostatic image to a second rotating closed belt in contact with said first rotating closed belt, the improvement comprising:selectably engageable belt cleaner means for removing residual toner from said second belt;control means connected to said reference means for selectably engaging and disengaging said cleaner means with said second belt.
  4. 4
The improvement recited in Claim 3 further comprising:reference means for providing a reference signal in response to a predetermined location of said second rotating closed belt passing a reference location;and wherein       said control means synchronizes said cleaner means so that said cleaner means engages and disengages said second rotating closed belt at said predetermined location.
  5. 5
The improvement recited in Claim 4 wherein:said predetermined location is located in the seam of said second rotating closed belt.
  6. 6
The improvement recited in Claim 4 wherein:said belt cleaner means is in a disengaged position, for two rotations of said second rotating closed belt, and in an engaged position for one rotation of said second belt.
  7. 7
The improvement recited in Claim 5 wherein:said belt cleaner means is in a disengaged position, for two rotations of said second rotating closed belt, and in an engaged position for one rotation of said second belt.
  8. 8
The improvement recited in Claim 3 wherein:said second rotating closed belt has a bulk resistivity in the range of 10⁸ to 10¹² ohms-centimeters.
  9. 9
In a print engine for use in a color electrophotographic system, the improvement comprising:a first rotating closed belt carrying a photosensitive receptor thereon;a second rotating seamless closed belt;first drive means for causing said first closed belt to rotate;second drive means for causing said second closed belt to rotate;means for selectably focusing light onto said photosensitive receptor carried on said first closed belt;means for creating an electrostatic image on a first imaging area on said first closed belt in response to said light;means for transferring said electrostatic image to a second imaging area on said second rotating seamless belt;first reference means for providing a first reference signal in response to a first predetermined location on said first rotating closed belt passing a first reference location;second reference means for providing a second reference signal in response to a second predetermined location on said second rotating seamless closed belt passing a second reference location;control means connected to said first and second reference means for synchronizing said second drive means to said first drive means in response to said first and second reference signal so that said first predetermined location contacts said second predetermined location during each revolution of said first rotating closed belt.
  10. 10
The improvement recited in Claim 9 wherein:said control means is responsive to said second reference signal such that an imaginary seam is defined on said second rotating seamless belt;and       further, said control means is responsive to said first and second reference signals so that said control means synchronizes said first and second drive means such that the seam of said first rotating closed belt contact said imaginary seam where it is defined on said second rotating closed belt during each revolution of said first rotating closed belt.
  11. 11
The improvement recited in Claim 9 wherein:said second rotating seamless closed belt has a bulk resistivity in the range of 10⁸ to 10¹² ohms-centimeters.
