9 claims: 4 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
An elastic filament or film formed from a spandex polymer having a hindered polyester soft segment and a hard segment derived from an organic diisocyanate and a diamine chain extender selected from aliphatic diamines, tetrachloro-meta-xylylene diamine and tetrachloro-para-xylylene diamine;characterised in that the hindered polyester segment is made from a poly(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylene 1,12-dodecanedioate)glycol including up to 25% of copolymerised units of other aliphatic diacids and/or glycols and having a molecular weight in the range of 1700 to 3000 and a glycol acidity, measured by the method of ASTM-1638-67T, of no more than 15 milliequivalents per kilogram, and wherein the spandex polymer is such that an as-spun elastic filament thereof has a set of less than 25%, an unload power of at least 0.027 gped and a break elongation of at least 400%, as determined in accordance with the method of ASTM D 2731-72 as described herein.
  2. 4
A filament or film as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the diisocyanate is methylene bis(4-phenyl isocyanate) and the chain extender is a mixture of ethylene diamine and 1,3-diaminocyclohexane.
  3. 5
A filament or film as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the diisocyanate is the functionally non-aromatic diisocyanate tetrachloro-(meta and/or para)-xylylene diisocyanate, and/or the chain extender is the functionally non-aromatic diamine tetrachloro-(meta and/or para)-xylylene diamine.
  4. 6
A heat-set elastic filament of the polymer as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, characterised by a set of no more than 25%, an unload power of at least 0.036 gped and a break elongation of at least 300%, as determined in accordance with the method of ASTM D 2731-72 as described herein.
