  1. 1
An absorbent member (42,542,642,842) comprising a mixture of hydrophilic fibrous material and discrete particles of an absorbent gelling material, said absorbent gelling material being dispersed throughout the absorbent member, said absorbent member having a back section (48,548,848) and a front section (50,550) contiguous with said back section (48), said front section having an end region (52) and a deposition region (54) contiguous both with said end region (52) and said back section (48), and said front and back sections defining the direction of longitudinal extent of said absorbent member, the lateral extent being perpendicular thereto, characterised in that said deposition region (54), which is positioned in the area of typical liquid deposition, is formed with an acquisition zone (56,656) having a perimeter, and a storage zone (58,558,658,858) at least partially laterally surrounding the perimeter of said acquisition zone and in fluid communication therewith, the average density and average basis weight of said acquisition zone being greater than zero but lower than the average density and average basis weight of said storage zone, the absorbent gelling material having a shear modulus in the range of 0.025 - 0.920 N/cm² (2500-92000 dynes/cm²) such that the particles of absorbent gelling material do not deform to such a degree that the capillary void space is substantially filled.
  2. 3
An absorbent member according to either one of Claims 1 and 2 wherein the average density of said acquisition zone (56) is from 0.05 to 0.15 g/cm³.
  3. 4
An absorbent member according to any one of Claims 1-3 wherein the top surface area of said acquisition zone (56) is completely positioned within said front section (50), preferably within said deposition region (54), and most preferably so that at least 30% of the top surface area is positioned in the front half of said front section (50).
  4. 6
An absorbent member according to either one of Claims 4 and 5 wherein the top surface area of said acquisition zone (56) comprises less than 50%, more preferably less than 20%, of the top surface area of said front section (50).
  5. 7
An absorbent member according to any one of Claims 1-6 wherein the acquisition zone (56, 556) comprises a mixture of the hydrophilic fibrous material and particulate absorbent gelling material.
  6. 8
An absorbent member according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the dispersion of hydrophilic fibrous material and discrete particles of an absorbent gelling material is uniform and has a fiber-to-particulate weight ratio of from 40:60 to 98:2, more preferably from 50:50 to 91:9.
  7. 9
An absorbent member according to any of the preceding claims wherein said front section (50) further has two transversly spaced ear regions (60, 62, 860, 862) ad a central region (64, 864) disposed intermediate said ear regions, said acquisition zone (56) being positioned within said central region (64).
  8. 10
An absorbent core comprising an absorbent member (642) in accordance with any one of the preceding claims in combination with an absorbent acquisition core (674) positioned adjacent said absorbent member (642) and optionally comprising hydrophilic fibers that are substantially free of absorbent gelling material.
  9. 12
An absorbent core according to either one of Claims 10 and 11 wherein said absorbent member (642) and said absorbent acquisition core (674) are each a continuous web of fibrous material.
  10. 13
An absorbent article having a liquid pervious topsheet (38);a liquid impervious backsheet (40) associated with said topsheet (38);and an absorbent body (42), positioned between said topsheet (38) and said backsheet (40), characterised in that the absorbent body (42) comprises an absorbent member in accordance with any one of Claims 1-9, preferably as part of an absorbent core in accordance with any one of Claims 10-12, the absorbent member preferably having a asymmetric shape.
  11. 14
An absorbent article, according to either one of Claims 12 or 13, wherein said absorbent member (642) is generally oblong and has a top surface area that is from 0.25 to 1.0 times that of said absorbent acquisition core (674), said absorbent member (642) being positioned relative to said backsheet (40) and said absorbent acquisition core (647) in a manner such that at least 75% of the absorbent gelling material in said absorbent member if found within the front two-thirds portion of the absorbent article.
  12. 15
An absorbent article according to any one of Claims 12-14 wherein said acquisition zone (56, 556) of said absorbent member (42, 542) is positioned relative to said backsheet (40) such that the top surface area of said acquisition zone (56, 556) is completely positioned within the front two-thirds section of the absorbent article, preferably within the front one-half section of the absorbent article, more preferably within the crotch region (26) of said article and most preferably such that the top surface area of said acquisition zone comprises less than 50% of the top surface area of said crotch region (26).
