A selective calling radio paging receiver comprising a) a preamble detector (5) for detecting a preamble, b) an address detector (9) for detecting a coincidence between an address contained in a received bit stream and the address of the receiver following the detection of the preamble, c) battery-saving means (13) for interrupting power supply to a power drain unit of the receiver at periodic intervals, d) clock recovery means (6) for recovering clock pulses from the bit stream, and e) a noise evaluation circuit for disabling said battery-saving means if the noise of the received bit stream is of unacceptable value, wherein said noise evaluation circuit comprises first and second counters (31, 33) for counting pulses during successive periods and for evaluating the noise from a difference between the counts obtained respectively by the counters (31, 33);characterized in that f) said noise evaluation circuit comprises an edge detector (3) for detecting the leading and trailing edges of each pulse in said bit stream and generating a transition pulse in response to the detection of each leading or trailing edge, and a window pulse generator (23) for generating a window pulse in response to each of the recovered clock pulses, g) said first counter (31) is arranged to count said transition pulse within said window pulse and said second counter (33) is arranged to count said transition pulse outside of said window pulse, and h) a comparator (36) is provided for comparing the output of the first counter (31) with the output of the second counter (33) and supplying a disable command signal to said battery-saving means (13) when the former is greater than the latter.
