Shared storage multiprocessors.

Abstract

An arrangement is disclosed which speeds up the execution of instructions in an information processing system by tightly coupling two or more processors to a random access storage mechanism in such a manner that no arbitration is required and no processor is forced to wait while another processor accesses the storage mechanism. This is accomplished by coupling the processors to the storage mechanism in a time multiplexed manner which enables each processor to have a periodic regularly occurring turn at accessing the storage mechanism.

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A data processing system having multiple processors, shared storage and a storage to processor multiplexer, wherein each processor has a fixed pattern of execution cycle at least as far as the occurrence therein of periods in which no storage access can be required and is forced into connection to the storage in a manner relatively off-set relative to the other processors in a periodic regularly occurring manner.
  2. 5
A system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the storage includes first and second storage mechanisms and the multiplexer includes means for coupling the processors to both storage mechanisms in a time multiplexed manner.
  3. 6
A system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein each processor is a pipelined processor having an instruction fetching mechanism, an instruction decode mechanism and an execution mechanism coupled in cascade in a pipelined manner, each processor having an address bus port and a data bus port for the instruction fetching mechanism and an address bus port and a data bus port for the execution mechanism, the multiplexer being arranged to couple the address bus ports and the data bus ports to the storage in such a way that each address bus data bus pair of ports is given a periodic regularly occurring turn for purposes of accessing storage.
  4. 7
A data processing system having multiple processors, shared storage and a common control timer, wherein each processor has a fixed pattern of execution cycle at least as far as the occurrence therein of periods in which no storage access can be required and is under the direct control of the common control timer for multiplexing individual processors to the storage, the timing protocol being such as to relatively off-set the execution cycles of each of the processors as to force the potential storage access periods of each such cycle to occur in the non-storage access periods of the execution cycles of the remainder in a periodic regularly occurring manner.
  5. 10
A data processing system comprising:first and second processors;an instruction storage mechanism for storing processor operating instructions;a data storage mechanism for storing data;first address bus means for enabling both processors to access the instruction storage mechanism;instruction bus means for transferring instructions from the instruction storage mechanism to both processors;second address bus means for enabling both processors to access the data storage mechanism;data bus means for transferring data between the data storage mechanism and both processors;and multiplexing means for alternately coupling the first and second processors to the various bus means in a repetitive manner.
