Low friction ferrofluid bearing arrangement.

Abstract

A low friction bearing arrangement includes first and second poles (20, 26, 42, 46) of magnetically permeable material which define first and second pole surfaces (22, 28) which are spaced apart. The first and second poles also define first and second side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48), respectively, which are aligned. A quantity offerrofluid (34, 64), positioned intermediate the first and second pole surfaces (20,26,42,46) and adjacent the first and second side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48), is held by means of a fringing magnetic flux between the first and second side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48) at a level which extends beyond the side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48). A rotatable shaft (10, 40) of nonmagnetic material is supported on the quantity of ferrofluid (34, 64) and is held out of contact with the side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48) thereby, such that the shaft (10, 40) may be freely rotated.

  1. 1
A bearing arrangement, characterized by:first and second pole means (20, 26, 42, 46) of magnetically permeable material, each defining a side surface (24, 30, 44, 48), said first and second pole means (20, 26, 42, 46) being spaced apart such that said side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48) are aligned,a shaft (10, 40) of nonmagnetic material positioned adjacent said side surfaces (24, 30, 44, 48) ,means for supplying magnetic flux to a flux path including said first and second pole means (20, 26, 42, 46) such that flux fringes from said pole means toward said shaft (10, 40), anda quantity of ferrofluid (34, 64) held between said pole means (20, 26, 42. 46) in contact with said shaft (10, 40) by flux fringing from said pole means (20, 26, 42, 46), such that said shaft (10, 40) is supported by said ferrofluid (34, 64) for free rotation.
