25 claims: 3 independent, 22 dependent

  1. 1
A system for monitoring the flow of parenteral fluid through a fluid delivery system (14) to a patient comprising:(a) means (10, 12) for supplying parenteral fluid at controllable flow rate through the fluid delivery system to a patient;and (b) means (18) for monitoring fluid pressure in the fluid delivery system supplying parenteral fluid to a patient;characterised by (c) means (24) for varying the fluid flow rate in a predetermined manner;(d) means for determining from the flow rate variations in conjunction with the corresponding variations in fluid pressure in the fluid delivery system, the resistance, as herein defined, to flow in the fluid delivery system, and (e) means (22) for comparing the resistance to predetermined limits and for generating output signals responsive thereto.
  2. 5
The system of the claim 3 wherein the microprocessor analyzes the time rate of change of pressure in the fluid delivery system and calculates a time constant for changes in the pressure which is responsive to changes in the flow rate in the fluid delivery system.
  3. 14
A method for monitoring the flow of parenteral fluid through a fluid delivery system to a patient comprising:(a) supplying parenteral fluid at controllable flow rate through the fluid delivery system to a patient;and (b) monitoring fluid pressure in the fluid delivery system supplying parenteral fluid to a patient characterised by (c) varying the fluid flow rate in a predetermined manner;(d) determining from the flow rate variations in conjunction with the corresponding variations in fluid pressure in the fluid delivery system, the resistance, as herein defined, to flow in the fluid delivery system;and (e) comparing the resistance to predetermined limits and generating output signals responsive thereto.
