Compressional wave hyperthermia treating method and apparatus.

Abstract

A wide bandwidth compressional wave transducer array (11) obtains information concerning tissue of a subject being treated and supplies hyperthermia compressional wave treating energy to a treated region of the subject. The array transducers are pulsed on and off with an on duty cycle portion of less than one. An array of compressional wave imaging transducers (53-56) is in the center of the array of compressional wave hyperthermia focused far field transducers (20-49) used to analyze and treat. The power and duty cycle of the compressional wave hyperthermia focused far field are varied to control the energy incident on certain regions in a treated subject. The ultrasonic frequencies of hyperthermia beams derived from individual transducers are randomly angle modulated so the energy of adjacent far field focused beams overlaps to a greater extent than focused coherent beams.

25 claims: 7 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for treating a region of a subject with compressional wave energy derived from an array of ultrasonic transducers having a focused far field containing said region, said apparatus being characterized by comprising means for supplying a plurality of disjointed bursts of electric energy to said transducers, each of each bursts comprising several cycles of said electric energy, said means for supplying causing said transducers to be excited to derive in said region many bursts of ultrasonic wave energy, each burst of said treating wave energy comprising several cycles of said wave energy.
  2. 5
Apparatus as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4 further including means for individually controlling the amplitude of the treating compressional wave energy derived from each of said transducers in said array.
  3. 6
Apparatus as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5 further comprising means for incoherently modulating said several cycles of electric energy so that adjacent beams from different ones of said transducers in said focused far field spatially overlap to a greater extent than coherent adjacent focused far field beams.
  4. 7
Apparatus as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 6 further comprising means for adjusting the frequency of said electric energy so that a lower frequency is provided in order to treat regions located relatively far from the boundary surface of the subject than the frequency provided for treating regions relatively close to the boundary surface of said subject.
  5. 8
Apparatus as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 7 further including means for from time-to-time exciting said transducers with pulse-like ultrasonic electric energy when said region is not being treated by said bursts of compressional wave energy, said transducers being excited while said region is in said focused far field of the array so that pulse-like ultrasonic compressional wave energy generated by pulses of said pulse-like energy are reflected from certain regions internally of said subject back to said transducers while said transducers are no longer excited by said pulse-like electric energy so that the said transducers derive electric signals having time positions and amplitudes together enabling information about different volumes in said subject between said array and said region to be determined.
  6. 11
Apparatus as claimed in any one of Claims 8 to 10 including means for exciting different ones of said transducers in said array in sequence so that pulse-like compressional wave energy from the different transducers is incident on the subject and reflects from certain regions at different times and further including means for detecting the interval from the time one of said transducers derives one of said pulse-like waves to the time said pulse-like wave is reflected back to said array, means for detecting the amplitude of each pulse-like wave reflected back to said array for each different one of said transducers and means for displaying along mutually orthogonal first and second axes the number of each transducer deriving a pulse-like wave of the compressional wave energy and a measure of the detected time interval associated with each numbered transducer respectively, and means for displaying an indication of the detected amplitude associated with each transducer.
  7. 14
A method of treating a region of a subject with compressional wave energy derived from an array of ultrasonic transducers, having a focused far field containing said region, said method being characterized by including the step of supplying a plurality of disjointed bursts of electric energy to said transducers, each of said bursts comprising several cycles of said electric energy, said supplying causing said transducers to be excited to derive in said region many bursts of treating hyperthermia ultrasonic wave energy, each burst of said treating wave energy comprising several cycles of said wave energy.
