Power amplifying circuitry for a radio frequency (RF) signal from a radio transmitter of a radio telephone, said radio telephone including a radio receiver for receiving different output power level commands each corresponding to one of a first set of output power levels, said power amplifying cicuitry including amplifying means (122) coupled to a first voltage source (118) providing a first supply voltage for amplifying the RF signal to produce an output RF signal, selecting means (150) selecting one of the first set of output power levels corresponding to the received output power level command, and maintaining means for maintaining the magnitude of said output RF signal at the selected one of the first set of output power levels, said power amplifying circuitry CHARACTERIZED BY:means for coupling said amplifying means to, and operating said amplifying means from, a second voltage source (182) providing a second supply voltage, said second supply voltage having a magnitude greater than the magnitude of said first supply voltage;means for detecting (140) the presence of said second voltage source;said selecting means (150) selecting one of the first set of output power levels corresponding to the received output power level command when said second voltage source is not detected as being present and selecting one of a second set of output power levels corresponding to the received output power level command when said second voltage source is detected as being present, said second set of output power levels including at least one output power level of greater magnitude than the magnitude of any output power level of said first of output power levels;and    means (158) coupled to said selecting means and maintaining means for applying said selected one of said first or second sets of output power levels to said maintaining means.
