Housing for intravenous delivery.

Abstract

A housing for insertion in an intravenous delivery system comprises a receptacle (80) having an inlet (94) and an outlet (96), and a separate cartridge (310) having a chamber for receiving a beneficial agent. The access between the cartridge and the receptacle is provided through a single pierceable stopper (318) closing a mouth of the cartridge. The arrangement is such that fluid passes into the cartridge in an upward direction before passing down to the outlet.

  1. 1
A housing means adapted for insertion in an intravenous delivery system including a fluid source and a fluid conduit, wherein fluid is delivered from the fluid source through the fluid conduit to the intravenous system of a patient, the housing means being adapted for receiving a beneficial agent to be mixed with liquid flowing through the fluid conduit, said housing means comprising:a). A receptacle adapted for insertion into the fluid conduit and including inlet means adapted for connection to an upstream portion of the fluid conduit and outlet means adapted for connection to a downstream portion of the fluid conduit;and b). A separate cartridge defining a chamber having and upstream end and downstream end, adapted for receiving the beneficial agent, said cartridge including a wall defining said chamber and a mouth thereto, and a pierceable stopper closing said mouth, said cartridge being adapted to plug into the remainder of said housing so that said chamber is in fluid communication with both said inlet means and outlet means through said single stopper. c). A first cross-over segment for placing said inlet means in fluid communication with said chamber upstream end;d). A second cross-over segment for placing said chamber downstream end in fluid communication with said outlet means;e). Whereby when said chamber is in fluid communication with said receptacle, virtually all liquid that flows out said outlet means flows through said chamber;and f). Further whereby said chamber downstream end is disposed at an elevation higher than said chamber upstream end, so that the direction of liquid flow through said chamber is in a generally upward direction;g). Such that as fluid flows through said housing, the beneficial agent in said chamber mixes with the liquid and is delivered therewith to the patient.
  2. 2
The housing in accordance with Claim 30, further comprising a separate, intermediate portion adapted for connection between and fluid communication between said cartridge and said receptacle.
  3. 3
The housing in accordance with Claim 1 or 2, further comprising a portion of the chamber wall being optically transparent, said chamber including a floating visual indicator therein, other than the beneficial agent, that, because of changing specific gravity of the fluid, changes elevation upon completion of mixing of the beneficial agent and delivery of the agent downstream of said chamber.
  4. 4
The housing in accordance with Claim 1, 2 or 3, further comprising a portion of the chamber wall being optically transparent, and including a plurality of floating visual indicators, other than the beneficial agent, in said chamber, said indicators being able to float in fluid of different specific gravity ranges, such that as mixing nears completion, certain of said visual indicators begin to drop and such that after mixing is complete and after the beneficial agent has been delivered out said chamber, all of said visual indicators have dropped.
  5. 5
The housing in accordance with Claim 1, 2 or 3, further comprising portions of the housing defining said receptacle and said cartridge being optically transparent, each including a plurality of floating visual indicators therein, other than the beneficial agent, said floating visual indicators within said receptacle being able to float in fluids of different specific gravity ranges, and said visual indicators within said cartridge being able to float in fluids of different specific gravity ranges, but the same ranges as said indicators in said receptacle, wherein visual confirmation of complete mixing and delivery of the agent downstream of said chamber is made when the same number of visual indicators remain floating in said chamber as in said receptacle.
  6. 7
An intermediate adapter portion for placing an intravenous delivery system including a fluids source, a fluid conduit and a receptacle in the fluid conduit in fluid communication with an initially separate cartridge having a beneficial agent therein, said intermediate adapter portion comprising:a). First cross-over segment means forming a fluid pathway, adapted for providing flow communication between the fluid conduit upstream of the receptacle and a defined chamber within the separate cartridge;b). Second cross-over segment means forming a fluid pathway, adapted for providing flow communication between the chamber and the fluid conduit downstream of the receptacle;c). Said first and second cross-over segment means adapted for securement to both the receptacle and the cartridge. d). Each of said first and second cross-over segment means including a cartridge end and a receptacle end, whereby when said intermediate adapter portion is secured to the receptacle, said second cross-over segment cartridge end is disposed at an elevation higher than said first cross-over segment cartridge end, such that the second cross-over segment cartridge end communicates with the downstream end of the cartridge chamber;and e). Whereby when said intermediate adapter portion is operatively secured between the receptacle and the cartridge, virtually all liquid which flows downstream out of the receptacle flows through the first and second cross-over segment means and the cartridge chamber.
  7. 8
The housing in accordance with Claim 1, wherein said wall is optically transparent.
  8. 9
The housing in accordance with Claim 1, wherein said cartridge further comprises a band about the outer periphery of a neck of said wall defining said mouth, locking said stopper within said cartridge.
  9. 10
The housing in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said cartridge is a drug vial.
