Compact computer terminal.

Abstract

A computer terminal device includes a flat screen display element (15) and a touch-sensitive element (16). Simulated keyboards can be displayed on the display element and, in response to the touching of the simulated keys, generate appropriate control signals. The same flat screen display can also be used to display computer output, either the result of calculations or the result of information retrieval requests. The slim silhouette of this terminal makes it ideal for hostile environments such as the factory floor or the hospital room.

10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A computer terminal comprising a housing adapted to be alternatively held in the hand or placed on a work surface,CHARACTERIZED BYa flat display screen in said housing for displaying output data and for displaying a plurality of simulated keyboards,a touch-sensitive element substantially coextensive with said flat display screen and responsive to physical touches on said element to generate signals identifying the position of the point of said element which has been touched, anda transparent protective layer sealing said screen and said element within said housing to protect the contents of said housing from environmental conditions.
  2. 5
A compact input and output computer interface CHARACTERIZED BY a touch-sensitive element for detecting the coordinates at which said element is touched, a flat screen display co-extensive with said touch-sensitive element, and means selectively responsive to touches on said touch-sensitive element for controlling the display on said flat screen display.
  3. 10
The method of providing data to a computing facility CHARACTERIZED BY a) displaying a simulated keyboard on a flat display device,b) detecting the position of the point of touching said simulated keyboard using a touch-sensitive layer associated with said flat display device,c) translating said position of the point of touch into a signal associated with the key of said simulated keyboard corresponding to said point of touch, andd) transferring said signal to said computing facility.
