Navigation mode selection apparatus.

Abstract

An aircraft navigation system supporting a plurality of navigation modes. An error estimator (l7) for each navigation mode (l0-l6) provides an estimated navmode error signal representative of an estimate of the error in the position signal generated by the associated navmode. A navigation mode selector (l9) enables the navmode having the smallest estimated navmode error signal that is consistent with procedure specified navaid criteria. The navmode computed position signal is processed through a low pass position filter (26). The estimated navmode error signal associated with the selected navmode is processed through a low pass position error filter (28) having the same time constant as the low pass position filter (26) to provide an estimated position error. The estimated position error is utilised to correct INS and DEAD RECKONING navigation as well as to set a threshold for navigation sensor data validation.

7 claims: 5 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A navigation system for generating a position signal representative of the position of a vehicle, the system comprising a plurality of navmode means (l0-l6) for generating the position signal by a respective plurality of navigation mode procedures, and navigation mode selection apparatus (l7) characterised in that the error estimator means (l7) for providing a plurality of estimated navmode error signals, each representative of an estimate of the error in the position signal generated by the associated navmode means, and navigation mode selector means (l9) responsive to said error estimator means for selecting the navmode means with the smallest associated estimated navmode error signal.
  2. 2
A system according to claim l, characterised in that the navigation mode selection means comprises means (l7) responsive to a procedure specified criteria signal for selecting the navmode means with the smallest associated estimated navmode error signal consistent with criteria represented by said procedure specified criteria signal.
  3. 3
A system according to claim l or 2, characterised in that it further comprises low pass position filter means (26) for processing said position signal, and low pass position error filter means (28) for processing the estimated navmode error signal associated with the navmode means selected by the navigation mode selector means (l7), thereby providing an estimated position error signal. The low pass position error filter means having the same time constant as the low pass position filter means.
  4. 4
A system according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the plurality of navmode means includes an INS navmode means (l5) associated with an inertial navigation system aboard the vehicle, and in that the error estimator means (l7) includes an INS error estimator for providing an estimated INS navmode error signal, the INS error estimator being responsive to the estimated position error signal for providing the estimated INS navmode error signal as a function thereof, and the INS navmode means including means for correcting the position signal generated thereby in accordance with the estimated INS navmode error signal.
  5. 5
A system according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the plurality of navmode means includes a DEAD RECKONING navmode means (l6) associated with a DEAD RECKONING procedure apparatus in the navigation system, and in that the error estimator means (l7) includes a DEAD RECKONING error estimator for providing an estimated DEAD RECKONING navmode error signal, the DEAD RECKONING error estimator being responsive to the said estimated position error signal for providing the estimated DEAD RECKONING navmode error signal as a function thereof, and the DEAD RECKONING navmode means including means for correcting the position signal generated thereby in accordance with the estimated DEAD RECKONING navmode error signal.
