EP0244002A1

Method of transmitting update information for a stationary video picture.

Abstract

a Finite audio and video signals are subjected to some digitalising encoding format and converted into blocks of audio and video words, respectively. For the transmission of these blocks via a compact disc the words are arranged in packets. Each packet has a packet head and a data field. Such a data field comprises either only audio words or only audio video words. The packet head indicates whether the associated data field comprises audio or video words. In order to transmit only changes in the picture in the case of, inter alia, quasi-stationary pictures, each block of video words is divided into a number of sub-blocks and an operational code is added to the beginning of each sub-block. This defines, inter alia, picture elements and the sub-block itself gives video words for these picture elements.

4 claims: 1 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A method of transmitting a number of finite information signals digitalised in accordance with some encoding format, inter alia, picture signals and associated sound signals, via a common transmission medium, which digitalised signals are each constituted by a block of information words, each information word associated with a picture signal being unambiguously related to a picture element of a picture divided into picture elements, said information words being accommodated in packets each of which is provided with a packet header and a data field, the data field of a packet comprising a number of information words of a block, the packet header indicating the information signal with which the information words in the data field are associated, characterized in that each block comprising information words for picture elements is partitioned into a number of sub-blocks, in that an operational code defining picture elements is added to the beginning of each sub-block, whilst the subblock comprises information words for the defined picture elements.
  2. 2
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the last sub-block is terminated with an end-of- block code.
  3. 3
A method as claimed in Claim 1, in which the picture signals are digitalised in accordance with a Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) format, characterized in that the operational code indicates that an and for which picture elements the picture signal is digitalised in accordance with a Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) format.
  4. 4
3 4. A device for receiving a digitalised picture signal transmitted in accordance with the method as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, and provided with a picture memory having a number of addressable memory locations each corresponding to a picture element and each being adapted to store an information word, characterized in that a separation device is provided which in response to the received operational codes stores the information words present in the sub-block in the memory locations of the picture memory, which locations correspond to the picture elements defined by the operational code.
