25 claims: 8 independent, 17 dependent

  1. 1
A vacuum skin packing film comprising at least two co-extruded layers of which:a bonding layer comprised of a material selected from olefinic homo- and copolymers and ionomeric materials;and    a complementary layer comprised of an ethylene-vinyl acetate-copolymer, said film being cross-linked by radiation characterized in that the vinyl acetate content of said complementary layer is in the 14% to 26% range, by weight, the remainder being ethylene, provided that a vinyl acetate content of 15% or less is excluded.
  2. 9
A film according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that it comprises a barrier layer provided between said complementary and outer layers.
  3. 11
A film according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that it comprises the following successive co-extruded layers:said bonding layer, said complementary layer, said adhesive layer, said barrier layer, said adhesive layer, said complementary layer, and said outer layer.
  4. 12
A film according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the combined thickness of the stretched layer or layers amounts to 35-75% of the overall thickness of the film.
  5. 14
A film according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the overall thickness of the film is within the range of 50 to 300 µm.
  6. 17
A film according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the thickness of the bonding layer and/or the thickness of the outer layer amounts to 3-25% of the overall thickness of the film.
  7. 19
A film according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that it is caused to cross-link by radiation at a lower level than 20 MRad.
  8. 22
A method of improving the formability and abuse resistance of a multi-layer, coextruded, thermoplastic packaging film having layers of ionomer, ethylene vinyl acetate hydrate, low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene characterized by replacing the low density polyethylene layers with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer layers having a vinyl acetate content in the range of 12% to 26% and thereafter irradiating the entire multi-layer film with ionizing radiation to induce cross-linking in the ethylene polymers and copolymers.
