14 claims: 4 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A fault tolerant computing system comprising at least one housing array (10) containing plural pairs of modules (24), each containing a hardware element (26) of the computing system, and a plurality of power supply modules (32), there being one power supply module for each hardware element, each of the pair of modules comprising a primary module and a back-up mirror module, characterized by:at least a pair of power distribution modules (40,42), one power distribution module (40) operating to distribute primary power from a first primary source connection to the primary modules and associated power supply modules, the other power distribution module (42) operating to distribute secondary power from a second primary source connection to the back-up modules and associated power supply modules;and    interconnect means (46, 106) for automatic electrical disconnection of removed modules and reconnection of replacement modules.
  2. 5
A computing system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, further comprising control panel means for indicating conditions of hardware element modules and power supply modules installed in said array.
  3. 10
A computing system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 9, wherein said housing array comprises internally an arrangement of shelves and wherein each said hardware element module is of dimensions compatible with a said shelf and comprises a carrier drawer for slidably engaging the said shelf of said array and including connecting means for connecting the hardware element of said module with said interconnect means associated with the said shelf at a single location of connection.
  4. 12
A computing system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 11, wherein said array further comprises a data cable connector plane accessible directly from the outside for enabling data connection cables to be attached to said array, said data cable connector plane including a plurality of data jacks in electrical connection with module positions of said cabinet associated therewith.
